Anthropology Question
Short essay/discussion post: due April 28, 5 p.m. (100 points, 10% of final grade) The final assignment for the semester is to write a 600-700 word essay analyzing a ritual and either a) comparing it to another ritual discussed in the Grimes textbook; or b) connecting it to some other subject (for example, a theory of ritual) discussed in Grimes. The ritual you discuss may be any of the following: 1) A ritual you are personally familiar with (e.g., one you participated in yourself, viewed in your community, heard about from a friend or family member); 2) A ritual you invent; 3) A ritual invented by generative AI that you then analyze and critique; 4) A ritual described in a scholarly or non-scholarly article (if scholarly, you may wish to choose an article from Grimes’ bibliography, though this is not required). If you have a different paper topic you’d like to pursue, please feel free to let me know. Once you have written your paper, post it to the Assignments dropbox, and then post either the full paper or a 250-300 summary of it to the discussion board, with a question for discussion. Students will read the posts and reply to at least three questions by other students. (Replies will be due on 5/5 and will count as your last reading analysis.) The essay must include: • • • • A description of the ritual (in one of the four categories above) A discussion of another ritual or concept in Grimes, including a quote with the page number in parenthesis If you choose option 3), a description of the prompt submitted (see below) and a citation to the chatbot itself, as well as your explanation for the choice of prompt and analysis of the generated ritual. If you choose option 4), a full citation to the article (see below). You should also have a Works Cited section at the end of the paper; you do not need to create a separate page. For general information, see: https://style.mla.org/works-cited/works-cited-a-quickguide/; and https://style.mla.org/works-cited/citations-by-format/: samples are taken from links to these articles) For AI, a sample citation would be: “Describe the symbolism of the green light in the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald” prompt. ChatGPT, 13 Feb. version, OpenAI, 8 Mar. 2023, chat.openai.com/chat. (see https://lsa.umich.edu/sweetland/instructors/guides-to-teachingwriting/citation-conventions-for-genai-and-chatbots.html). For your in-text reference, simply state that you used ChatGPT (or whatever) and explain why you chose the prompt you used. Academic articles with page numbers: • • In text, put: (Goldman 70). Plagiarism/AI use: As noted on the syllabus, plagiarism or inappropriate use of AI (beyond spellcheck and basic mechanics) will be severely penalized. However, on this particular assignment, if you take option 3), you may use generative AI in an appropriate manner: this includes fully citing your prompt, and then analyzing, in your own words, the generated/invented ritual. Please let me know if you have any questions about what constitutes plagiarism or inappropriate AI use. Students may be required to meet with me in person or on Zoom, and/or revise or rewrite their paper, if any issues arise. Grading rubric: 1) Coverage of required topics and quality of analysis (75 points): Papers must cover all three items noted below; missing any one of these items will typically lead to a 25-point deduction. The paper should also demonstrate careful reflection and analysis. 1) Explanation of the ritual; 2) Comparison to a ritual or concept in Grimes, including a quotation and citation; 3) if taking option 3) above, description and analysis of AI use. 2) Mechanics (including citations), editing, style: 25 points possible: Read over your paper over to ensure that every sentence makes sense, says what you want it to say, and is free of grammatical errors.
