Adaptive Leadership in Organizations Introduction Adaptive leadership is leadership that stems from mobilizing a group of individuals to handle tough challenges and succeed in the end Northouse, 2022). Leadership today is very different from past years. The notion that one individual single-handedly yields results through the enforcement of their ideas is outdated. Instead, leadership is now considered largely a team sport. Managers in organizations, coupled with other individuals or personnel in leadership positions, collaborate with their junior employees to achieve the desired goals or simply to initiate much-needed changes Northouse, 2022). Businesses have increasingly become volatile not only in Saudi Arabia but across the globe, and executives often grapple with the challenge of keeping abreast of all the changes that occur. The business environment has become highly unpredictable with the surge in globalization, resulting in situational challenges that must be dealt with expeditiously (Alshuaibi, 2017). One such situational challenge was the COVID-19 pandemic that brought the world to a standstill. Situational Challenge – The COVID-19 Pandemic The Abdul Latif Jameel organization is a family-owned business that was started in Saudi Arabia in 1945 by the late Sheikh Abdul Latif Jameel (Abdul Latif Jameel, 2024). The organization deals with Toyota automobiles in Japan and operates across seven core business sectors. The company has a presence in over 30 countries in six continents (Abdul Latif Jameel, 2024). The organization’s revenue largely depends on mobility, and as such, it was greatly hampered during the pandemic period when movement was highly restricted. Digitization is one way through which the Abdul Latif Jameel organization used to mitigate the challenges faced during and after the pandemic period. The leadership of the enterprisefocused more on accelerating the digitization of both their customer and supply chain interactions and equally within their internal operations (Abdul Latif Jameel, 2021). Through one of its senior executives, the organization has placed increased investment in technology and the use of data analytics in making key decisions (Abdul Latif Jameel, 2021). Situational challenges are not only dealing with the challenge at hand but equally focusing on how to mitigate or avert it in the future (Yaghi, 2017). An adaptive leader wants to understand why it occurred in the first place and how to ensure that it does not occur in the future. Abdul Latif Jameel has expanded its investment in renewable energy and water development (Abdul Latif Jameel, 2021). The pandemic shed light on the increasing need to safeguard the environment, especially in situations where movement is constricted. Authentic leadership calls for a clear and concise communication breakdown. Throughout the pandemic period, personnel in the organization were kept abreast of all the activities taking place and changes that would occur in the future. It was largely done through the organization’s intranet coupled with numerous virtual meetings across the different departments. Everyone within the enterprise, irrespective of hierarchy, needed to be on the same page. Conclusion Adaptive leadership takes different forms. It is not a one-size-fits-all type of leadership. That said, the four elements that define adaptive leadership remain true. They include emotional intelligence, organizational justice, character, and development. A leader must have influence before taking on the role of being an adaptive leader. Authentic leadership comes into play at this juncture. Through the use of authentic leadership, executives can build trust with their personnel, which, in turn, makes buying into any form of change easier. Authentic leadership requires a high level of transparency and integrity coupled with emotional intelligence. The Abdul Latif Jameel organization was able to mitigate the effects of the pandemic to a large extent through these two mediums. Over the years, through its conducive work environment coupled with its extensive philanthropic efforts, the enterprise has been able to enhance its authentic leadership equity.
