3) The paper needs to have an interpretive thesis statement, which in general should focus on the story’s

central idea. It cannot just be a plot summary paper, but should balance summary and interpretation.

4) A good paper will make use of quotations from the story or film dialogue and will interpret the quotations to help you prove your points.

5) You should consult secondary sources (e.g. websites, articles, or books) to gain information on the author’s biography, the historical context of the story, etc. (However, do not focus too much on recounting the author’s biography in your essay.) Make reference to at least one secondary source in

your paper. Your essay should include at least one quotation and one paraphrase from a secondary

source. Introduce the quotation and paraphrase with a signal phrase. Secondary sources should be

cited using MLA format.
