History Discussion
Your final paper asks you to listen to Blight’s final lecture on the legacies of the Civil War (among other things). That final lecture is all about interpretations: how do we (historians and the nation at large) frame the Civil War and its meaning then and now?
He previews that final lecture in this one by discussing very early interpretations of the causes of the Civil War that forever set the tone of historical debates.
Professor Blight explains that two historians, Rhodes and Beard, while differing in their analysis, both lay the groundwork for a “reconciliationist” approach. This approach allows the South to maintain honor; it lays the blame for the war on institutions or very large, vague, historical forces rather than on people; and it crucially minimizes the importance of slavery.
On this week’s discussion board, please quote a line(s) from today’s lecture that brings to light the topic of historical interpretation. Explain what Blight means in that quotation. Then reflect on this question and provide an answer: Why is the way historians talk about the Civil War important?
