You will need access to a reliable computer for course content and an internet connection for office hours meetings with your professor. Please don’t wait to the last minute to complete and / or submit your class work just in case a tech problem occurs. 2 COURSE/CATALOG DESCRIPTION Introductory study of the basic concepts, theoretical approaches, and methods of sociology. Topics typically include the analysis and explanation of social structure, group dynamics, socialization and the self, social stratification, culture and diversity, social change and global dynamics. Course objectives include the ability to apply sociological ideas to everyday life. COURSE CONTENT 1.The sociological imagination 2.The historical development of sociology 3.Major sociological perspectives 4.Studying the social world: an introduction to research methods 5.Society and culture 6.Socialization 7.Interaction, groups and organizations 8.Deviance and social control 9.Stratification: class, race, ethnicity, age, sex and gender 10.Social Institutions: family, education, religion, medicine, economy/work, politics, science and technology 11.Social dynamics: population, urbanization, environment and globalization 12.Social change COURSE OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to: 1.Understand and apply the sociological imagination to a variety of contemporary social phenomena. 2.Understand the historical development of sociology as a discipline. 3. Distinguish between the use of various research methods. 4.Identify, compare and apply the primary sociological perspectives. 5.Explain and apply key sociological concepts. 6.Describe and explain the basic dimensions of social inequality and social change in historical and contemporary society. 7.Assess what social forces and organizational structures are most prominent in shaping, guiding and influencing individual and group behavior in contemporary society. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1.Apply the major theoretical perspectives in sociology to real experiences. 2.Identify, explain and apply the principles of scientific research methodology. 3.Appraise the range of cultural variability in human societies. 4.Explain inequalities of class, race, ethnicity, gender, and age in modern and pre-modern societies in sociologically terms. 3 COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND POLICIES: CLASS FORMAT The objectives of this course will be met with recorded lectures, discussion forums, reading text assignments, homework, documents, websites, videos, films, news clips and quizzes. All quizzes will be constructed from any and all material presented in class which makes full/excellent participation/engagement key factors in achieving satisfactory grades. Each student will submit a written project on a social issue relevant to topics discussed in class. All requirements must be met in order to successfully complete this course. CANVAS This is an asynchronous course conducted on Canvas with no set days or times to meet on Zoom, except for office hours. Course content will be studied/completed by students following the modules in the class Canvas course shell at their own pace while in compliance with all time limits and due dates. It is the students’ responsibility to check Canvas postings, syllabus, homepage, modules, additional readings, announcements, assignments and canvas messages from the instructor daily. Likewise, grades will be posted in Canvas. Emailing your instructor via the Canvas Inbox is preferrable for basic/daily communication. You will receive a response within 24-48 hours. The instructor will be available for a Zoom meeting for office hours on Tuesdays, 11:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. or an appointment may be arranged, if needed. It is the responsibility of students to drop any course before the drop deadline. Students who remain on the official college roster, but do not login regularly, participate or complete the course will receive an evaluative letter grade. 4 ASSIGNMENTS / QUIZZES / PROJECTS Each lecture, discussion, assignment and/or project will promote an understanding of the value of studying human behavior, help students become critical thinkers, respect divergent viewpoints, review relevant evidence regarding human behavior, learn to value intellectual honesty, understand facts vs. opinions, learn to base opinions on factual data not personal experiences, assumptions or just feelings. QUIZZES 1. Four quizzes will be administered throughout the semester in Canvas. 2. The structure for quizzes 1-4 may include multiple choice, fill-in, true/false, short answer/essay, definitions. It will be a combination of any of the above. 3. Follow instructions for each quiz or answers may be marked as incorrect. 4. Do not provide examples in lieu of answering a question. 5. Double space answers. 6. All students must indicate their first and last name, and class section # 7026 on the quiz answer sheet in Canvas. 7. Be sure to check due dates and time limits in advance. Don’t wait until the last minute to do anything in this class! 5 CLASS PROJECT: CURRENT EVENTS RESEARCH PROJECT 1.See “Sociological Topics List” in Module 1 in Canvas for examples of some suggested or possible topics. 2.Select a general topic or category and then select something more specific which will enable you to find articles. Examples: Family=general topic / subtopic==divorce or domestic violence=specific; Crime=general topic / subtopic==cybercrime or mass shootings=specific 3.Each student writes a paper which will be approximately 4 numbered pages; page 1 starts with the Current Event Report not the title page or works cited page, do not number the title page, typed, 12 font, double space, MLA format, 4 articles from reliable, well-known sources. Examples: Time or Newsweek magazines, Los Angeles or NY Times, American Sociological or Psychological Journals from 2020-2024. 4.Paper has a title page with identifying information regarding the class section number # 7026 the student’s name, general topic and specific subtopic chosen should be listed. 5.Paper includes an introduction, summary, conclusion and a critique. The introduction should introduce the topic, why you selected it and name sources with the authors’ emphasis. Summarize the entire contents of the sources. The conclusion is about the student’s analysis and pro or con position of the issue/topic. The critique is the student criticizing the sources. 6.Works Cited Page required with links to articles posted from sources. Make sure the links will open. 7.SUBMIT PROJECT IN THE CANVAS INBOX AS AN ATTACHMENT TO A MESSAGE AND INDICATE “CURRENT EVENT PROJECT” IN THE SUBJECT LINE. SUBMIT PAPER IN WORD DOC OR PDF (not google doc). DUE DATE 4/29/24. 8.PAPER IS DUE ON OR BEFORE THE DUE DATE!!! NO PAPERS ACCEPTED AFTER THE DEADLINE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. TURN IT IN EARLY NOT LATE!!! 8.STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO FOLLOW SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS AND GOOD CONTENT WILL BE THE BASIS FOR THE GRADING ON PROJECT. 6 GRADING SYSTEM ALL GRADES WILL BE POSTED IN CANVAS ASSIGNMENTS (2) DISCUSSIONS (6) QUIZZES (4) PROJECT (1) 25 points each==50 points 50 points each=300 points 50 points each=200 points 100 points each=100 points 650 CANVAS SCORING 100—–90%=A 89—-80%=B 79—–70%=C 69—–60%=D 59—–00%=F All of the course content including assignments, discussions, the project, additional readings, websites and quizzes will be posted in the Modules in Canvas. Effort and full engagement in this class are important factors that are considered when computing all grades! It is the only way to succeed in an online class! All grades will be posted in Canvas. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY / CODE OF CONDUCT See college catalog which delineates guidelines regarding academic integrity. Academic integrity is expected of all students, at all times. Cheating, plagiarism, or any form of dishonesty is not acceptable. Violation(s) of these policies will result in consequences ranging from verbal/written warnings to a referral to the administration of the college for further action, such as suspension or expulsion depending on the gravity of the incident. Disruptive behavior of any kind in class or online is not acceptable. Students are expected to be honest and ethical at all times in the pursuit of academic goals. Cuyamaca College students are bound by the Student Code of Conduct. In this course, cheating, plagiarism, disruptions of instructional activity, fraud and/or lying will result in, at a minimum, a grade of “zero” for the assignment/test with no make-up permitted. Any of these infractions may also result in an “F” for the course as well and formal disciplinary action by the Dean of Student Affairs as described in the code of conduct. It is the student’s responsibility to maintain academic integrity in all coursework. It is the instructor’s responsibility to report all incidents of Student dishonesty to the Dean. Exhibit the same respect in the online class as you would in a face to face class or the workplace. Adhere to correct spelling and grammar rules. Use a word processing program where you can check spelling and grammar. Use a positive tone and review your work or messages before hitting the send or submit button. Think carefully about who should receive your emails or messages. Avoid sending an email to the entire class, unless everyone must read it. Use descriptive subject lines for email messages and discussion board postings. Check your syllabus for instructions or policies indicated by your instructor.
