Technological advancements in the past decades have helped optimize nursing research, nursing practice, and how healthcare is delivered to patients, improving patient outcomes and safety and increasing patient satisfaction. The electronic health record is one technology I plan to implement in the hourly rounding fall prevention program I am proposing to address patient fall risk in my workplace (Özer & ?anta?, 2020). The EHR has been determined through evidence-based practice as effective in improving patient outcomes and patient safety. It helps healthcare providers assign fall-related medical codes to each patient based on their fall risk assessment. The medical codes enable healthcare providers to obtain data on fall-related incidents and develop quality measures and tools to measure quality outcomes. Using electronic healthcare records, healthcare providers can create clinical alerts and reminders for structured hourly rounding (Özer & ?anta?, 2020). Also, by using electronic health records, healthcare providers can optimize the collection and transfer of patient data to the authorized end user, thereby improving patient outcomes and safety (Özer & ?anta?, 2020). The barrier to using this technology in fall prevention is the healthcare provider’s lacking technological knowledge of implementing the electronic health record (Özer & ?anta?, 2020).
Another technology to implement in addressing and preventing patient falls is video monitoring and alarm technology. (Oh-Park et al., 2021). It will enable the healthcare provider to continuously monitor patients and respond to their needs to avoid attempting to do things themselves that could cause them to fall. One barrier to implementing technology to prevent falls is insufficient human resources and an organizational culture that does not promote the latest technological innovations (Oh-Park et al., 2021).
