Your first assignment is to write an argumentative essay on the following comparing and contrasting community organizing with at least one other approach to social change. What does organizing have in common with other types of social change work?What distinguishes organizing from other efforts to create change? And why do these distinctions and similarities matter? In your essay you should:

State an argument that reasonable people can disagree with in a thesis statement that appears early on in the essay.

Focus on the distinction between organizing and one other form of social change (direct service, advocacy, mobilization, issue education, etc.)

Provide evidence to support your argument, drawing from reading we’ve done for class, classroom discussion, and outside sources.

Develop a structure that makes it easy for the reader to understand your overarching argument and your use of sources.

Demonstrate college-level writing ability.

Cite your sources using appropriate methodology for either Sociology or Political Science

The paper should be no less than 5 pages in length. Please use 12 point font, 1 inch margins, and double spacing

Avoid using long quotes from sources. In a paper as short as this, one or two short sentences quoted from a source will suffice.

Write a draft of your paper. Read it out loud, preferably to someone else. Make changes to grammar and structure based on reading the paper out loud.
