Annotating is a good first step to writing an essay.
Some of the things you might include in your annotated reading:
Ask Questions (these might be questions that arise during your reading or after).
Paraphrase Key Passages (paraphrasing is placing the author’s ideas in your own words – even though you are using your own words, the ideas belong to the author(s) so make sure you give credit to the source).
Make Connections to other things you have learned, read, heard, seen, experienced, etc. In other words, connect the dots from the reading to something beyond.
Include Comments (noting a key point or something that needs to be explored further are two sample comments).
Identify Key Vocabulary (these might be words whose meaning(s) you do not know or words that you want to explore further, such as exploring origins or connotations).Example of an Annotated Reading ResponseExample_of_Annotated_Reading_Response.docxDownload Example_of_Annotated_Reading_Response.docx
