What are New Religious Movements (NRMs)?
Final project – GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS ( read this first )
The final project for this class has two steps:
Step 1:
A proposal (5 points) – must be submitted for my approval by Nov. 22 ).
Required Sources:
The project must draw upon at least two separate chapters from Race and New Religious Movements, along with at least one other source from this class.
The additional source can be a reading, lecture, or film clip from any module in this course.
While you may consult outside sources on your own if you wish to gain a fuller background perspective on the religious movements you are comparing, the content of your final paper or podcast must be based entirely on class materials.
Suggested questions to help guide your analysis:
(Note: these questions are provided only as a suggested starting point as you begin exploring the two religious movements you have chosen to focus on. Not all of the questions will be equally applicable to all of the chapters in the book, and you need not answer all of them in your final project).
How do members of these religious movements define race? Do practitioners of these religions appear to approach race as biological reality, as cultural construction, as a combination the two – or as something else entirely?
What degree of tension to you see between these religious movements and the surrounding society, particularly on matters of race? Are practitioners calling for a change in race relations? If so, what sorts of changes are they calling for, and how do they expect that change will occur? (For example, will change occur through human action? Through divine action? Will it occur through individual transformation, or collective action?)
How do approaches toward race within these religious movements intersect with the movements’ approaches toward other social issues such as gender, politics, and economic relations?
What sources of religious authority do practitioners of these religious movements look to as they make the claims that they do about race? Do they draw upon religious texts, visions, prophecies, the actions of leaders, etc.?
[If relevant for the religions you chose] How is this religious movement perceived by those on the outside? What language do government officials or other outside observers use to describe members of this new religious movement?
INSTRUCTIONS FOR STEP 1, THE PROPOSAL
Submit a 100 -200 word (minimum) paragraph that indicates your intentions for the final paper or podcast. In your proposal, please address the following:
Which two New Religious Movements from the book, Race and New Religious Movements in the USA, will you be comparing?
Why did you decide to compare these two movements?
Which additional source(s) from class material do you plan to use?
Which format do you intend to use (paper or podcast)? For podcasts, do you plan to work alone or enlist others in an “interview” format?
What are your initial findings? (use the exploratory questions I have posted above as a guide)
