1 Research Project Proposal Paper College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Lewis University NURS 53300 Scholarly Inquiry Dr. Kimberly Scheffel February 24, 2024 2 Primary Assignment Part 1: Research Project Proposal Paper (100 points) Select a health care issue relevant to nursing (a clinical problem from your practice or topic selected after review of current professional literature dealing with the topic). Keep in mind that this is not a research assignment that you will translate into practice within the timeframe of this course, rather a quantitative research PROPOSAL (may be a quality improvement or EBP research). Select a minimum of 5 published reports of research, preferably nursing, which are: 1. Primary research sources. Secondary sources may provide directions to potential primary sources, but you must have a minimum of 3 primary sources. If you do not understand what constitutes a primary report of a research study, please refer to your book for clarification. Secondary sources are allowed after the minimum of three primary sources requirement has been met for a total minimum of five sources. 2. Current (publications no more than 5 years old) and with at least one nurse as an author, nursing journals are strongly preferred, but not solely required. Contact Faculty with questions. 3. PICOT and 3 primary research studies (quantitative or qualitative) must be approved by course faculty if they do not meet the requirements stated above. The research articles will be utilized as the literature review for the proposal. The literature review will be succinct and limited to about 5 pages, as it is just one portion of the proposal itself. 4. The proposal must be 10-12 pages long, not including the title page and reference page(s). Proper APA format (7th Edition) must be followed (use the student paper guidelines, except include an abstract). 3 Research Project Proposal Paper Abstract 1. Abstract (3 points) a. Refer to APA manual or OWL at Purdue or APA Manual for guidance with the abstract. b. The abstract is a summary of the entire paper. Background 1. Background Section (3-5 pages) (27 points) a. Background/significance i. Identify issue ii. Explain issue iii. Short introduction on purpose of the literature review with key words used for search b. Theoretical Framework i. Description of the theoretical framework that will guide your proposal. c. Literature Review i.Primary research study synthesis including article purpose sample, methods, outcome measurements and results. ii.Short summary paragraphs synthesizing the main points of all 5 studies related to your issue d. Purpose of the proposal based on the PICO question and your literature review Study Design 1. Study design and method (4-6 pages) (30 points) a. Include research design: detail design including intervention and outcome measurement b. sampling design and inclusion and exclusionary criteria c. internal and external design validity d. data collecting procedure e. instrumentation validity and reliability f. methods of data analysis. Implications for Practice Implications for nursing research and practice (1-2 pages) (15 points) a. Incorporate the evidence from the literature review and your aims of the project. b. Use examples on how your study will add to practice or describe further research. 4 References
