International Relations 101—Introduction to International Relations
International Relations 101—Introduction to International Relations
While conflicts around the world show just how complex international relations is, there is one theme that IR scholars seem to return. How much is the future of the world going to be defined by the US/China rivalry. The more optimistic view is that the two nations are driven by competition with one another and that this competition can be managed. The more pessimistic is that a conflict or even a world war is likely and will redefine power and politics internationally. So the question for this last paper is: Is a conflict between the US and China likely and even possibly inevitable? Or can competition be managed?
First, outline how realism, liberalism, constructivism, and post-colonial approaches to international relations approach this issue. What might they predict? But most importantly, how do their prescriptions for managing conflict propose the most effective approach to this question.
Second, lay out the history of the two nations and their relations with one another. How does each country view this history? What about the history provides hope to manage the competition and what about the history suggests war is likely?
Third, identify the key points of contention. You do not need to be comprehensive here. Outline what YOU think are the most important areas of potential conflict and competition. It can be economic, based on issues of trade, economic growth, and economic alliances with key nations. It can be political, in areas like the China/Taiwan issue, the South or East China Sea, or the border issues such as China/India, China in Southeast Asia, or in Central Asia. How likely can this produce conflict or can it be limited to peaceful competition.
And your conclusion again should return to the first point and make proposals as to how best to manage this competition.
Some guidelines:
The essay should be no more than 2000 words. This is a roughly 4 page essay single spaced or 8 pages double spaced.
You are making an argument in this essay, with proposals to manage the competition. Take the perspective of an analyst of international politics, not a position as either the US or China. Don’t choose sides. Instead, talk about managing the competition.
Cite all non-original work. I prefer the internal MLA format with a works cited page (rather than footnotes or endnotes). I remind you of the key principles of citations:
oThey are a way to show that you have listened to the conversations about your topic before you include your own thoughts. When you join an ongoing conversation, you should listen first to understand what they are discussing before chiming in yourself.
oAcademics always love to cite where they have read or seen something. This is because we want to share with one another, with our classes, and with our readers other works you loved and cited. For example, I saw Oppenheimer and immediately wanted to talk about the book American Prometheus, which is the source material for the movie. Citations are how we share all this information.
oAlso, citations make your research easier. Citation tracking is how we avoid downloading hundreds of articles and attempt to construct an essay. When we find a great article, we track the citations and look up what inspired the argument. It’s why we say that when we care more about the citations than the prose, that’s what makes us an academic
