In this project you will make a paper plate sundial. All you need is a paper plate, some kind of stick (such as a pencil, a straw, etc.) and something to write with. A marker would be nice, because it will show up well in your photos. But a pen is fine.
Put a hole in the middle of the plate and push the stick through the hole. Glue it or tape it in place. Straight up from the plate.
Put the plate on the ground. If the ground is soft, you could push the stick all the way through and into the ground. That way you would not need to glue the stick.
The plate needs to be secure and must not blow in the wind, so you might have to tape it down (if on a hard surface) or put a rock on it.
Start sometime in the morning. Let’s say you start at 10 a.m. At 10 a.m. the stick will cast a shadow. Write the number “10” at the end of the shadow. Over the next hour the shadow will move. At 11 a.m. write the number 11 at the end of the shadow. Keep doing this for a total of six times. 10 to 4, 11 to 5, etc. I want to see six times written on the plate.
Leave the sundial in place until the next day, then take a pic at two different times. I want you to see that the sundial tells correct time, i.e., that the number the shadow is pointing to corresponds to the correct time. Submit the two pictures to me through Canvas.
The sundial will NOT come out looking like a clock. If you draw a clock on the paper plate, you get 0/10. The numbers will be crowded to one side of the plate.
It is very important that you DO NOT MOVE the sundial at any time during construction or after you have finished it. It will not tell correct time if you move it. If your sundial moves overnight, it will not work the next day. Be very careful if you own a cat. If the cat discovers a sundial without a cat on it, the cat will remedy the problem.
If I see any evidence that the sundial has changed position in any way between the first photo and the second, NO POINTS. The ultimate mistake is making two sundials, one for each photo. One of your predecessors did that.
The mistake that has cost your predecessors the MOST POINTS is this: writing in numbers on the paper plate to make it look like a clock, then taking pictures as the shadow moves. NO. WRONG. I can easily tell if you did that. The numbers will not be evenly spaced like on a clock. You must use the shadow to determine where the numbers go. Do not write the numbers first.
If you are not having any luck, check to see that the Sun is up and the sky is clear, and that there are no shadows from buildings or trees, falling on your sundial.
