There are two parts to the assignment: conducting the interview and summarizing the content in a 2–3 page paper. Quotes and details make this paper stronger. I. CONDUCTING THE INTERVIEW You will need to interview an older adult (aged 65 or older) who you do not know. It can be a neighbor’s friend, a partner’s relative, or a friend of an older relative. Make sure of their age! You may conduct the interview over the phone, on Zoom/Facetime, or in person. During the interview, you are to ask the following questions: 1. Tell me a little bit about yourself – Where did you grow up? Where do you live now? What did school or professional life look like for you? 2. How would you describe your race and ethnicity? 3. Please describe your culture or cultural values. What is important to you? 4. What is a typical day like for you? What do you like best about your days? Dislike? 5. Looking back at your life, what are two of your favorite memories? 6. How has COVID-19 affected you over the last three years? How have you coped? 7. What are two things you would like to accomplish right now or in the near future? 8. Tell me about your friends and family members. 9. Do you participate in some sort of physical activity each week? What kinds? 10. How important is physical health in your well-being and quality of life today? 11. What is one message you would give to my generation, if you could say anything? 12. What other sorts of things are important to you right now that I may not have asked? You may also add other relevant questions as they arise during the interview. Before starting the interview, give a brief orientation to introduce yourself and tell the person the purpose and the duration of the interview. The interview will consist of the above questions and take approximately a halfhour. You should NOT record the interview, so make sure you take good notes as you are speaking with the person. II. SUMMARIZING THE CONTENT Write a 2-3 page paper (double-spaced) summarizing the responses to the questions from your interview and reflecting on the experience. This should read like a paper, not just a series of answers to your questions. Be sure to include the following, with distinct headings for Summary and Reflections: 1. Interview Summary • All twelve responses should be incorporated into the paper. • Please make this paper fresh, creative, and personalized; you are introducing the person, so include observations, unique details, and other info that makes your person “come to life” on the paper. • Include one conclusive observation to sum up your interview. 2. Reflections on Interview • Reflect on you pre-conceived notions of older adults and discuss how your experience in the interview compare/contrasted with your expectations. (You could approach this by discussing at least • • one aspect of the interview that made you question your pre-conceived notions of the older adult and one thing you noticed and/or learned that was “expected” or in line with your assumptions.) List one question that you still have after writing about the person you interviewed. It should be a reflective question that you think about AFTER the interview. The question should be reflective, respectful, and insightful. Discuss the impact of this interview on you personally and professionally. What were your emotional reactions (i.e., surprise, sadness, hope, anger)? How does this interview and reflection process relate to your role as a future health care provider? Additional Requirements: • Do NOT use the person’s name in your paper; you may use another (made-up) name. • You may use the first person (“I”) when summarizing. • Please do NOT pretend you are the person themselves; you should be writing about the person you interviewed and summarizing and their answers to your questions. Your reactions are welcome as well, as relevant. FORMATTING Use 1” margins, DOUBLE SPACED, 12 point Times New Roman or 11 point Calibri/Arial font, and put name in upper left corner, preferably in the header. No running header or cover page needed.
