Description and Purpose of this Assignment

In this assignment, you will recognize, describe, and explain some of the key social institutions, structures and processes that underlie people’s working experiences, and how they are part of a complex, diverse, and globalizing world.  You will utilize geographic tools and theories to better understand individuals, industries and work, and the surrounding relationships. You will revisit and build upon concepts explored earlier in the semester and incorporate new themes and concepts.

For the second part of the assignment, you need to produce either an essay (1500-1800 words, Arial font, size 12, 1.5 spacing) that describes your interviewee’s working life and connects it to key geographical themes and concepts that we are discussing in this class.

Part II: The Essay

After completing the interview, write an essay 

First, describe the person’s work and daily routine in some detail. Discuss why the person chose that job, what their spatial routine is like at work, and some other details such as what they like or dislike about their job.

Then analyze the geographic dimensions of your interviewee’s work, using concepts from our textbook and lecture. In particular, please explore at least three of the themes below

How is the interviewee’s work part of broader globalization and/or urbanization processes?

How is the work situated in either the industrial, agricultural, or service economy? Considering the types of activities discussed in the text book on page 387 (primary, secondary, tertiary, quarternary, quinary) , describe What type of activity you think the work is and why?

• How does the local place, economy, and culture shape your interviewee’s work opportunities and work experiences? (e.g. are there primarily service jobs in this person’s neighborhood and that is why it was chosen? Does the work reflect local culture or local values? In what ways?)
• What kinds of social and power relations (gender, race, ethnicity etc) are reflected in the interviewee’s work place or broader industry?
• How did your interviewee’s mobility or migration experiences shape their job choice and experience?
• Descriptions, Sources and Citations
• You are not required to do outside research for this assignment. However, you do need to draw from course readings, films, and lectures in order to explore the questions above. You need to cite these sources as you use them.

Final paper: 12.5 points (criteria below)

Demonstrates understanding of spatial thinking and key geographic concepts and processes (e.g. globalization, urbanization) and effectively weave concepts into a coherent paper (5 points)

Demonstrates understanding of and give examples about how place, geography (including local culture etc) and broader social processes and institutions shape work experience and opportunities (3)

Demonstrates ability to understand and identity different types of economic and work activity and their characteristics and how they are part of a complex, diverse, and globalizing world (3)

• Demonstrates capacity to write and/or produce video content coherently and in an organized manner  that highlights key themes and ideas from the course materials and includes appropriate citations (1.5)

INTERVIEW QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS: 

• Why did you choose your job? I was originally recruited by my graduate mentor to UIC to build and expand a research lab in the department of Anesthesiology. After establishing the lab, I transferred to the Cardiovascular Research Core in the Research Resource Center as Senior Scientist/ Assistant Director. I choose UIC for the growth and opportunities a large state university can provide.

What other job options did you consider and why? I considered other research supervisory positions at other large universities and pharmaceutical companies. These other institutions were considered for personal and professional growth and success.

• Does your job choice reflect priorities such as commute time, balancing caregiving responsibilities with paid work, salary, safety or other issues? All these issues were considered, but my most significant concerns were salary and commute time.

Lack of other opportunities? Fortunately, I had a handful of offers to consider.

• Specific training for our passion about this work? The nature of scientific research entails and requires having passion and determination. Your training is working through your failures and hardships.

What type of training was provided or required for this job? My position requires research experience in biology, microbiology, immunology, biochemistry and animal surgery.

Have you moved in the past? Yes, early in my career I took a position at John Hopkins University in Baltimore Maryland.

Could you describe what you do at your place of work on a daily basis? Everyday is different, if I’m not working on experiments in progress, I’m meeting with clients and staff to discuss future projects and endeavors. 

Is your workplace or job part of a broader industry (such as the health care; or manufacturing industry; or restaurant/service economy)? Yes, we deal with research projects with theorical research, healthcare, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Is your specific work site part of a chain of other workplaces? Yes we are part of the RRC, which consisted of many cores.

Where is your job located? The University of Illinois at Chicago, in Chicago, Illinois.

How do you get there? I usually commute via driving, but I also occasionally with public transportation.

What kind of mobility is required for your job? Occasionally, I need to travel to other research facilities.

Could your job be done in another place (e.g. outside of Chicago, in a rural or urban area, in another country?) Why or why not? Yes, but it requires research institutions with specialized facilities and equipment. 

What do you like most about your job? The opportunities to contribute to better healthcare.

What do you like least? The constant challenges involved in scientific research.

Do you have customers that you serve? Yes, we work with other faculty scientists and research institutions, including other universities and pharmaceutical companies. 

Are there any specific demographics of your customers (e.g. young people, older people, people from the neighborhood or city of Chicago, people of a particular gender or ethnic group). Please explain. No. Science has no race, color, gender, age, creed and is spoken and observed all over the world.

Could you describe the general demographics of co-workers at your workplace? (e.g. young people, older people, people from the neighborhood or city of Chicago, people of a particular gender or ethnic group, a diverse mix of several groups?). My workplace is a diverse mix of several groups.

Could you tell me a bit about interactions among people at your job? The majority of our interactions involves discussing data, current and future projects. Our usual mode of interaction is via email and Zoom.

What is the work culture like? Fun, friendly, challenging, engaging, collaborative, flexible and rewarding.

If you feel comfortable sharing, could you tell us about any power dynamics that you notice in your job? There is a power dynamic in every job you have, your constantly thinking about and trying to impress your boss.

Would you recommend this type of work or job to someone? Why or why not? Yes, it is rewarding and provides many opportunities to success.

What would you say is interesting or unique about your workplace or job? My workplace is unique and interesting, because it involves the interaction and combination of various disciplines of science.
