CHARACTER ANALYSIS/DSM Diagnosis
You must choose a movie from the list at the bottom of this page, the list was edited after I recorded the video so some movies are no longer on the list and others were added.
A lot of what we see portrayed in movies may not be based in reality, which can lead to confusion about psychological disorders. Select one of the following films and review the film as a Psychology student, not just a movie-watcher. ***Pay attention to the movie ratings and know that there is significant violence and difficult scenes/triggers in a number of the movies – choose wisely! If you want assistance choosing an appropriate movie, reach out to me!
This is a review based on psychological information provided in the textbook and/or lecture. This should be a concise 700-word assignment, this is not an overview of what you think about the movie in general. Word count should be at the end of your assignment. This assignment will not be accepted if it is in the form of a screen shot or jpeg file. Cite your sources! See the rubric below for grading criteria.
Include the following in your assignment:
Provide a brief summary (no more than a paragraph) of the selected movie, including the movie title, character chosen, setting, premis and primary diagnosis of your chosen character, then discuss it from a psychological viewpoint.
In no specific order, include the following:
- In your discussion you should explain the diagnosis depicted in the film.
- Based on your knowledge from class and your text, determine if the film accurately depicts the disorder identified or if it is flawed.
- If the character is diagnosed in the film, is it even the right diagnosis? Support your answer.
- Explain, using examples from the movie, how the diagnosis is flawed and/or accurately represented (it can be both).
- Are there any ethics violations or ethical concerns you have about the treatment of your character by professionals (if there were any).
- Be sure to discuss the observable behaviors that are consistent with the disorder.
Choose one movie only, preferably one you've never seen. Even if you have seen it, you're watching it through a new lens now, so rewatch it. Then answer the questions that follow the list of titles.

Case Note: Date of Assessment: 12/03/23
The client is a 34-year-old woman who was brought to the psychiatric emergency room by her sister due to concerns about her mental health. Her sister reported that Ms. B had been experiencing symptoms such as hearing voices, expressing paranoid beliefs, has become severely unkempt and displaying disorganized behavior for the past six months or more. She also noted that Ms. B had previously been diagnosed with depression and anxiety but had not responded well to treatment.
The client reports that she noticed about a year ago while working at a local coffee shop she started to feel extremely overwhelmed, typically on the more busy days, she felt it hard to focus and noticed she was also becoming withdrawn from co-workers, becoming anhedonic, losing motivation to get ready to show up for work making it feel impossible to function and handle simple tasks or remembering drink recipes, coworkers reported to her that her speech was disorganized as if she was speaking gibberish, words not making sense and not speaking in full sentences. The client then requested to be put on schedule part time. Client claims to have experienced her first acute psychotic episode while closing at work one night, November 11th 2022, she heard door handles rattling and pounding on the doors and windows, the alleged burglars then got in and were in the bathroom, she contacted local authorities, after a thorough investigation of the building there were no signs of forced entry or break-in, the manager was contacted to check footage of that night and there was no one shown on the premises at any point in time that the client claims to have heard attempts of forced entry, client then quit job November 13th , 2022. She claimed she had been receiving phone calls from those who she believed were the alleged burglars using a mysterious and deeply disguised voice.
Since then, the client reports that she used to receive the phone calls monthly but has progressed to weekly over the course of the year. She experiences pseudo hallucinations daily. She claims to hear the same voice coming from the television. She reported that these auditory hallucinations were commanding her to harm herself and others and that they are “going to get her”. She expressed beliefs that she was being followed and surveilled by unknown entities that were “in cahoots” or working with the alleged burglars from her previous incident. While in psychosis she also reported experiencing tactile hallucinations and as a result of these hallucinations she showed me her index fingernail which she claimed to have picked off to “get the bugs out from under her nail. I witnessed that the index fingernail on her left hand appeared to have been removed.
Upon evaluation, the client appeared disheveled and agitated, she displayed disorganized thinking and speech patterns, making it difficult to follow her train of thought. She exhibited flat affect and minimal eye contact.
Diagnosis: Paranoid Schizophrenia
Rational: Following a comprehensive assessment and review of her symptoms, the client was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. The diagnosis was supported by the presence of positive symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions, as well as negative symptoms including social withdrawal and disorganized behavior. The lack of response to previous depression and anxiety treatment further supported the diagnosis of schizophrenia.
