Sexually transmitted infection is present among those of adolescent age. Thirty-two percent of cases reported are in the age group of 19 years and under (Usonwu et al., 2021). It is estimated that billions of dollars are often spent to treat sexually transmitted infections for this particular age group (Usonwu et al., 2021). Therefore, parents and providers are tasked with ensuring that sexually active children are getting tested so that they can be treated and live healthy lives with positive health outcomes.
A father of a 17-year-old should have a conversation in a setting that is comfortable and free of judgment. The father should first be educated on how to engage and foster a positive dialogue with a 17-year-old, ask the teenager if they are sexually active, and explain to the teenager sex methods and practices (Usonwu et al., 2021). The father should not use a loud tone or cause the youth to feel judged for being sexually active (Usonwu et al., 2021). The father should inform the 17-year-old about getting tested and knowing their status as a way of improving the quality of life and having a positive health outcome if the teenager admits to being sexually active (Usonwu et al., 2021). If the teenager does not admit he or she is sexually active, the father should ensure that the teenager knows where to seek resources for condoms and testing as a reminder to practice safe sex and to know their status (Usonwu et al., 2021).
A father of a 14-year-old should use educational diagrams to explain health conditions associated with illnesses that result from untreated sexually transmitted infections. While this conversation may pose a child for a father to ask a 14-year-old if he or she is sexually active, it is a conversation that must occur (Usonwu et al., 2021). While the child may seem shy to share, the father must ensure the child is aware that the space to share is safe and confidential.
A father of an 11-year-old should include an illustration and create a safe space for the child to share. When the child feels that he or she will not be judged or get in trouble for being sexually active, there is a higher probability that the child will feel comfortable sharing (Usonwu et al., 2021). If the child’s mother is present, the mother should also be included if the child is a girl. Girls are more likely to be more open to speaking to the same gender compared to the opposite gender on topics related to sex or sexual health (Usonwu et al., 2021). This topic can be complex for a father to have; however, it is necessary to ensure that their child is safe and understand the different consequences that may follow when he or she is sexually active and is not using safe practices or methods (Usonwu et al., 2021).
The Florida Statute states that individuals who are 24 years of age or older and have sexual relations with a minor under 17 years of age have committed a crime, and it is punishable (McCann et al., 2020). Minors can seek sexual health services such as birth control, sexually transmitted infection testing, and HIV and also be treated (McCann et al., 2020). Parents are to be notified of a child or youth who is seeking to abort a pregnancy (McCann et al., 2020). Therefore, providers and parents should engage in safe conversations and allow the child or teenager to be expressive without fear of judgment or embarrassment.
