As a theoretical framework, intersectionality is frequently used by contemporary sociologists to understand structures of inequality and social arrangements that create conflicts between groups. In this week’s reading, Mary Romero also writes that “intersectionality is a sociological concept for unraveling the complexities of systems of power … that position us in different places at different times in relation to dominance and subordination” (36). In your discussion post, I’d like you to focus on this statement. Considering Romero’s discussion of gender and sexual identities on pp. 83-111 in the primary reading, describe one specific example that illustrates how she uses intersectional analysis to develop a deeper understanding of relations of dominance and subordination than could be achieved by focusing on only one dimension of inequality. Pick an example that stands out to you, and explain why it caught your attention. Then discuss how, in your view, intersectional thinking might help to advance the goal of social justice, which is important to many sociologists who work within the conflict perspective.
