1.) Lashell- Hello everyone, one misconception about classroom management that has been dispelled through discussions with experienced teachers is that strict discipline and control are the most effective means of maintaining order. Contrary to this belief, these teachers emphasized building positive relationships and understanding the underlying reasons for student behavior. They found that a more empathetic and proactive approach, focused on prevention and addressing the root causes, was far more effective in creating a conducive learning environment. This dispels the misconception that rigid control is the sole solution, highlighting the significance of fostering a supportive and respectful classroom culture that addresses the diverse needs of students.
2.) Maria-One misconception about classroom management that has been dispelled is the idea that a strict, authoritarian approach is always the most effective way to maintain control and discipline in the classroom. Research and experience have shown that while strict discipline is important, an overly authoritarian approach can stifle creativity, discourage critical thinking, and create an environment of fear rather than one of respect and collaboration.
Effective classroom management now emphasizes the importance of building positive teacher-student relationships, creating a supportive and inclusive classroom environment, and using proactive strategies to prevent behavior issues rather than simply reacting to them. Teachers are encouraged to use a combination of clear expectations, positive reinforcement, and fair consequences to maintain order and encourage student engagement, rather than relying solely on punitive measures. This approach promotes a more positive and productive learning environment for students.
3.)Ebony- One common misconception about classroom management that has been dispelled is the idea that it is solely about controlling students and maintaining order through strict discipline. The experienced teachers highlight that effective classroom management goes beyond mere control; it involves creating a positive and inclusive learning environment. Building strong relationships with students, fostering a sense of community, and employing proactive teaching strategies are often considered more impactful than relying solely on reactive disciplinary measures. Teachers aim to promote a positive atmosphere that encourages student engagement, collaboration, and intrinsic motivation, rather than simply enforcing rules through punitive actions.
4.)Ava-That students will need a consequence every time they have a bad behavior. Where as I know most students wilol have a bad day, the first teacher I spoke with stated how she used reward over diciplne more often than not. Using good behavior as an example, when a good behavior is rewarded whether be by extra online time during free time, a bag of candy or being picked from the treasure box. She stated how she noticed when she began rewarding over taking things away per se, there was a major turn. Finding ways to motivate students to want to thrive with good behavior was a major win.
5.)Jamie-
Hello!
One misconception about classroom management that has been dispelled is that you can eliminate disruptive behaviors by good instruction and the classroom being quiet is a good classroom management. My mentor does a great job in my opinion with classroom management. She has taken the time to get to know her students as individuals. She uses the knowledge to work with each student on their level. The lesson plan can be amazing across the board that does not mean you will not have to deal with behaviors. Some students get overwhelmed with learning and cannot voice what they are feeling so they can become disruptive to the classroom. As a teacher you must get be able to address that behavior and help the student. Today well I was in the classroom my mentor was working with students with sounding out words letter by letter and then blending the word together. One of the students would not participate in the activity and he kept covering his face with his hands when it was his turn. The teacher encouraged him to try but he would not do it. So, once they got done, he refuse to go to recess. He sat in the chair and cried. She talked with him, and he just would not move until about 10 minutes later. So, she asked him do you want to try to sound out a word before we go outside. He nodded yes and he sound out the word. She was patience and never said things like your friends have left you or I am going to call your parents if you do not get up. These a great example of how she handles her classroom management.
6.)Trinity- hi professor! Hi Class!
Through discussions with experienced classroom teachers, one prevalent misconception about classroom management that has been dispelled is the belief in a one-size-fits-all approach to teaching and discipline. The insight gained from these conversations highlighted the diverse learning needs, abilities, and backgrounds of students. It became evident that effective classroom management involves differentiating instruction and providing individualized support to address these differences. This dispels the misconception that a uniform disciplinary strategy is universally applicable. To support this understanding, a scholarly source by Marzano and Marzano (2003), titled “The Key to Classroom Management,” underscores the importance of recognizing and responding to the individual characteristics of students. The source advocates for tailored approaches that consider students’ unique qualities, emphasizing that a personalized approach is more effective in fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.
