You will be expected to write an original research paper for this class on a theory chosen from the final paper theory
choice list at the end of the syllabus (see list to choose from at the end of the syllabus). SUBMITTING A PAPER
THAT YOU SUBMITTED FOR ANOTHER CLASS IS ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT. Once a theory has been
chosen, it cannot be changed. Your paper must follow the following format (See APA 7th edition style):
A. Title page (see APA 7th edition manual)
B. Abstract, keywords follow Abstract (see APA 7th edition manual)
C. An introductory paragraph and the following: (your paper MUST do the following:
Enumerate answers to items 1-5 in order and address each of the 5 items or the paper
will not be accepted):
1. Provide a thesis statement about why or why not the theory chosen is a “good” theory
2. Identify and describe the theory as WVI or WVII, as appropriate and justify
3. Identify and describe the central tenets of the theory
4. Identify and describe the functions of a “good” theory and whether the theory you’ve chosen
meets those functions
5. Identify and describe the evaluative criteria of a “good” theory and whether your theory meets
those criteria
D. Concluding paragraph(s)
E. References (cited per APA 7th edition manual)
Papers are to follow a scholarly format and arguments and claims must be supported with research from scholarly
journals and books. You must follow APA 7th edition style and additionally enumerate your paper answers in order
when answering each of the 5 questions (support your answers with research) satisfactorily (i.e., completely and
accurately) to meet the minimum requirements of the assignment.
Papers are to follow the APA 7th edition style. Acceptable journal suggestions include: Communication Monographs,
Human Communication Research, Communication Yearbook, Journal of Communication, Communication Quarterly,
Western Journal of Communication, Communication Theory, Southern Journal of Communication, Communication
Studies, Sex Roles, Journal of Marriage and Family, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Journal of Social
and Personal Relationships, and Personal Relationships. Use of magazines or non-academic sources is not acceptable.
You may use books/book chapters if the books are scholarly books. If you have any questions about the acceptability
