Peer Response EKG – Marilyn
Peer Responses:

- As a part of this week’s discussion, I selected Skillstat’s website regarding EKG rhythms. I could identify 28 of the most common ECG rhythms through the learning activity. Additionally, it described how to identify them using their unique characteristics. The remainder of this discussion post discusses what I learned during this activity. Electrocardiograms are measures of the electrical activity of the heartbeat, abbreviated EKGs or ECGs. During each heartbeat, an electrical impulse or wave is transmitted. Muscles contract and the blood is pumped out of the body due to this magnetic wave. The rate and rhythm of the upper and lower chamber contractions on an ECG will be shown by a normal heartbeat (AHA, 2022).
- New nurse practitioners or registered nurses should learn how to read an EKG. Learning the most common ECG rhythms, Skillstat is a great reference and learning tool. These slides are both informative and appealing. The sound effect makes it more exciting. I understood the rhythm better after playing the game. Even when you are not looking at the monitor, rhythm sounds can give you an idea of whether the rhythm is normal or abnormal.
An accurate interpretation of an ECG can have a significant impact on clinical decisions. It also helps prevent unnecessary interventions resulting from false-positive interpretations, resulting in the recognition of cardiac emergencies and their treatment. An EKG is a vital part of the clinical protocols (Penalo et al., 2020). A student’s ability to read ECG rhythms will developed by repeated practice and training with feedback.
A benign rhythm that I watched, is sinus arrhythmia, which fluctuates when a person breathes in and out. Generally, they have narrow QRSs and upright P waves, particularly in lead 2. There was also discussion and description of atrial fibrillation as a rhythm without p waves but with QRS complexes. It also occurs when the two atria do not beat regularly, resulting in blood flow blockage (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). The atria cannot send blood to the ventricles, so there is no blood flow. In the long term, this may increase the risk of thrombus formation (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). Several risk factors contribute to diabetes mellitus, such as age, high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes mellitus (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). As well as atrial flutter, which occurs as a result of variations in the AV junction, there are other significant rhythms. Accordingly, the AV junction could pass every second, which would be a 2:1 response, or every four impulses, which would be a 4:1 response.
In general, when it comes to the heart, specifically, discussing the ECG, we should consider all the elements that may reflect the heart sufficiently. These elements are; the viscosity of the blood and contractility of the myocardia & vessels, vascular resistance, and the electricity system (Pollock et al., 2023).
