GEO 101 George Mason University My Celebration Trip to Italy
My Celebration Trip TO ITALY After all the studying, sleepless nights, hundreds of tests, and exams, I’m finally going to Italy to celebrate my accomplishment for passing my bar exam in January, which signaled the start of an exciting new phase in my life becoming a lawyer (first in my family). My husband speaks Italian fluently, so I felt at ease while in the country by knowing and understanding the language enough to have a small conversation. After studying archerite in high school I’ve always had a special place in my heart for Italy. Italy is one of the many places that have been on my bucket list for years, and now I’m so excited my dream has finally come true. I decided to travel to Sicily, to celebrate for two reasons, passing the Bar exam and being able to finally explore the southern Italian island that sits at the tip of the country’s characteristic bootshaped peninsula (Even the island looks like a wonder piece of art “archerite”. Just as I landed and going to collect my luggage, I noticed some beautiful art pieces throughout the airport. Knowing how excited I am I ask the first person I see “puo farmi una foto” meaning (can you please take a picture of me). Leaving the airport and driving through Italy I can see all of the craft that emerges out of Italy natural and cultural settings. What Sicily had to provide was pure amazing. Naturally, a trip to Italy would not be complete without sampling its renowned cuisine. Even though I’m used to the Americanized version of pasta,” I was itching to taste the real Italian food flavors: crisp olives, sweet grapes, and the famous Pizza. Let’s not forget to mention an amazing movie called Ratatouille, even though that dish is based in France, I heard that Italy has an amazing version of it, marinated with serval homemade herbs, it’s a dish that I must try. I chose to go in economy class, money is tight due to me paying back my college loans so unfortunately, I was not able to get a nonstop flight which would’ve costed me $1,000 more. I’m scheduled to depart at 7:30 PM on January 16, 2025, from Baltimore (BWI) and arrive in ROME at 1:30 pm local time after an approximate twelve-hour journey. Setting out on this rewarding journey, I was excited to make new memories and strengthen my bond with this fascinating nation. I’m going to enjoy this chance to see Italy through the eyes of an unexperienced tourist. ITALY Leaning Tower of Pisa. 41⁰ 53’ N, 12⁰29’E Once I arrived the first thing I did check into my hotel, I checked into Hotel Pisa Tower which is only 328 feet away from my first excited destination. One of the reasons why I chose to travel to Italy to celebrate Is to visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The Tower of Pisa is one of the most famous buildings in the world. It’s approximately 60 meters tall and is most famous for its tilt. This tourist spot is one of the most famous places in Italy. After I view the Leaning Tower of Pisa and of I course took literally 70 photos, starving is was an understatement. I walked to the Ristoro Pecorino and ordered some amazing pasta. Fresh was an understatement the Tordelli Lucchesi was define. Fresh pasta stuffed with beef and mortadella, with pork and beef ragout. I will complement my meal with a selection of wines from the restaurant’s extensive cellar. Exhausted is more than words can describe, walking back to my hotel to enjoy a nice hot bath and a glass of tea while I read my novel until the next day. colosseum 41⁰ 53’ N, 12⁰29’E Viator is a source that list 15 exciting things to do in Italy. I’ve always wanted to see the Colosseum. I enjoy looking at different historic architects and the Colosseum has been intact for 2,000 years. As stated by the source “The Colosseum has been a symbol of Rome since 80 AD, and today it’s a top monument in Italy. Some 50,000 spectators once gathered in the amphitheater’s tiered seats to watch gladiator games. Though parts of the original marble facade were pilfered over the years to build the likes of St. Peter’s Basilica, the Colosseum remains remarkably intact 2,000 years later.” This building is amazing, and you can also buy tickets to have the ultimate experience while visiting this historic building. This source also provides other historic destinations I can visit while in Italy capri 40⁰ 33’ N, 14⁰13’E I’m so excited to visit a coastal town in Italy this is one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy. Capri which is also one of Italy’s most exclusive destinations. After I finished exploring the cities, I headed to the Amalfi Coast, a beautiful stretch of coastline south of Naples, where secluded beaches sit below towering cliffs that seemingly drop into the sea. Unfortunately, due to me visiting Carpi in January, I’m not able to swim in the water, due to the temperature. The sea would not be warm enough to swim in until May. This source also provides other places that I can visit while in Italy. Mount Etna 37⁰ 45’ N, 14⁰59’E I’m thrilled enjoy this amazing journey to Sicily, the enchanting southern Italian island where geography and gastronomy intertwine to create a truly unforgettable experience. I decided to Visit Mount Etna. my adventure began here when I visited the most active volcano in Europe. Mount Etna is towering majestically over the Sicilian landscape and offers breathtaking views and unparalleled geological insights. We’ll witness firsthand the awe-inspiring spectacle of volcanic activity while exploring the lunar-like landscapes of its slopes. Mount Etna is a stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, towering over the surrounding landscape at an impressive height of approximately 3,329 meters (10,922 feet) above sea level. Despite its volatile nature, Mount Etna’s rugged beauty attracts tourists worldwide. Its lunar-like landscapes, comprised of hardened lava fields, craters, and smoking vents, offer a surreal backdrop for exploration and photography. One of the first stops on our journey is the stunning Alcantara Gorge, located on the northern slopes of Mount Etna. Carved by the Alcantara River over thousands of years, this deep canyon offers a glimpse into the geological forces at play in the area. Nestled on a hilltop overlooking the Ionian Sea, the charming town of Taormina beckons with its ancient ruins, medieval streets, and panoramic vistas of Mount Etna. It’s a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Our adventure wouldn’t be complete without sampling the renowned wines produced on the fertile slopes surrounding Mount Etna. Despite the volcanic terrain, these vineyards yield some of Sicily’s most distinctive and flavorful wines. Dolomites 46⁰ 23’ N, 11⁰51’E Today, I’m excited to go on a thrilling adventure through the majestic Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its rugged peaks, lush valleys, and alpine splendors. my journey begins in the charming town of Cortina d’Ampezzo, nestled amidst the towering peaks of the Dolomites. Surrounded by verdant meadows and dense forests, Cortina serves as the perfect gateway to the alpine adventure. I explored the town’s picturesque streets lined with quaint shops, cafes, and restaurants, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of this alpine paradise. From boutique shopping to gourmet dining, Cortina offers a delightful blend of culture and relaxation. my next destination takes me to the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo, a trio of towering peaks that dominate the skyline of the Dolomites. As I hike along scenic trails, I will be treated to panoramic views of these majestic rock formations and the surrounding alpine landscape. Standing in awe of nature’s grandeur, I will marvel at the sheer magnitude of the Tre Cime and the rugged beauty of its rocky slopes. It’s a humbling reminder of the power and resilience of the natural world. my expedition reaches its pinnacle as I arrive at the enchanting Lake Braies, a pristine alpine lake nestled amidst the towering peaks of the Dolomites. With its crystal-clear waters and emerald-green shores, Lake Braies is a tranquil oasis of serenity and natural beauty. I embarked on a leisurely boat ride across the shimmering waters of the lake, surrounded by towering cliffs and dense forests. Food and Drinks 41⁰ 53’ N, 12⁰28’E I decided to visit the Italian restaurants and try their cuisines. Rome is filled with new foods and amazing ones indeed. 1. Breakfast at Roscioli Caffè Pasticceria: my day begins with a traditional Italian breakfast at Roscioli Caffè Pasticceria, located near Campo de’ Fiori. I started my morning with freshly baked pastries, such as cornetti (Italian croissants) filled with creamy custard or jam, accompanied by a rich espresso or cappuccino. It’s the perfect way to fuel up for a day of culinary adventures. 2. Lunch at Trattoria da Enzo al 29: For lunch, I headed to Trattoria da Enzo al 29, a charming family-run trattoria in the Trastevere neighbourhood. Here, I will sample classic Roman dishes made with love and care, such as cacao e pepe (pasta with pecorino cheese and black pepper), amatriciana (pasta with tomato sauce, guanciale, and pecorino cheese), and fried artichokes. Also had a white whine that was so delicious. 3. Dinner at La Pergola: For a truly unforgettable dining experience, I ended my day with dinner at La Pergola, the only three-Michelin-starred restaurant in Rome. Located atop the Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel, La Pergola offers panoramic views of the city and a menu showcasing the finest Italian ingredients prepared with innovative flair. From handmade pasta dishes to exquisitely crafted seafood and meat entrees, each bite is a culinary masterpiece. I will complement my meal with a selection of wines from the restaurant’s extensive cellar, curated by an award-winning sommelier. A day lost in the world of novels I settle into my favorite armchair that I enjoy so much inside of my hotel room. I grabbed a hot cup of coffee, ready to start my reading adventure. Opening the first book takes me right away to a far-off place where love blossoms in the face of hardship and heroes set out on great missions. I get lost in the beauty of storytelling during the early morning hours, and the time passes in a haze of wonder. I reluctantly pull myself from the made-up worlds that have captivated my attention as midday draws near. I head to the kitchen and make a straightforward but delicious dinner, relishing every bite as I refuel for the experiences in each chapter of my next book. In the evening, I dive into a new genre and become engrossed in the nuanced character development and complicated storyline that unfold on the pages in front of me. Every book offers a different viewpoint and a brand-new escape from reality, whether it is mystery and suspense, romance, or historical fiction. After reading I step onto my balcony and smell the fresh air of Italy. Proud of myself I Actually made it and enjoyed ever last piece of this amazing trip. Packing to go home and in complete shock happiness that I Completed the Bar Exam and its one amazing thing crossed from my bucket list ITALY. Italy you have been so kind to me, until next time.
