Food Studies Related Writing
Food Studies This assignment provides you the opportunity to conduct participant observation and then create original qualitative data by writing an ethnographic field note. The purpose of this assignment is to give you hands-on experience using ethnography so you can reflect on questions related to the method (and reflexivity and positionality) and your own (and your group colleagues’) experience. In order to write a field note, you must observe social life. Where you go should be loosely related to your group’s research topic for Writing Assignment 1. It should be a place where there are actually people around (i.e. if there are no people, it’s hard to write about anything). For example, if your group worked on coffee, you can go to a coffee shop; if your group worked on vanilla to saffron, you can go to a spice shop or a supermarket; if your group worked on cheese, you can go to a cheese shop, etc. Once you select a location, each member of your group should observe social life for at least 30 minutes. While you are “in the field,” please take jottings (on your phone or a small notepad) about what you observe to help prompt your memory later on. The Location is chosen: https://g.co/kgs/mUo6hbh You can pretend you went to the location and write everything based on lotically sound hypothesis. The location is in North York, Canada. Directly after you finish your observations, sit down to write your field note. Following the best practices described by Emerson, Fretz, and Shaw (2011), make sure your field note includes thick description of your observations. In the article “It’s about the Depth of Your Data,” Annette Lareau and Aliya Rao give more helpful tips: “Qualitative data has the advantage of making readers feel they are hearing the interview or seeing the scene unfold in their presence. Our trust of qualitative data should thus rely (more than it currently does) on how vividly the researcher captures the microlevel nuances. The point is to study social interaction-how people act and how others react to their actions, as well as how people react to the reactions. Descriptions in fieldnotes need to be precise. Rather than using the word “said” for example (as in “She said”) we encourage sociologists to think more deeply about the way in which the communication unfolded. Did she seem angry, bored, thoughtful, unsure, frustrated, react to the reactions. Descriptions in fieldnotes need to be precise. Rather than using the word “said” for example (as in “She said”) we encourage sociologists to think more deeply about the way in which the communication unfolded. Did she seem angry, bored, thoughtful, unsure, frustrated, annoyed, or sad as she spoke? Was his tone of voice loud, boisterous, gentle, irritated, exasperated, discouraged, delighted, gleeful, cheery, or jovial? (A thesaurus is a crucial aid here.) […] The notes should be greatly detailed. At the very least, researchers want to take twice as long to write up their notes as they spent in the field.” To write a complete field note, you need to spend about double the amount of time you were in the field writing and reflecting on what you saw. The fieldnote of each group member should be at least 600 words long. Expectations Your assignment should include the following components: The field notes of all the members of the group, and A collective reflection on doing ethnography that should include a discussion on reflexivity and about each member’s positionality. First, in a section titled “FIELD NOTE”, please copy the field notes that each member of your group wrote based on your observations and jottings. It must be at least 600 words long per member of the group Second, in a section entitled “REFLECTIONS,” please reflect on how you felt as a participant observer, and what it was like to write a field note.
