Discuss Psalm 29
1 Discuss Psalm 29. What does it mean? What lessons or meanings does it have for us to apply in our lives? Nature Psalms (Psalm 29) Nature psalms are a subtype of descriptive praise psalms that specifically focus on God as the creator and sustainer of the world. These types of psalms are useful in reminding us that our very existence, both its beginning and its continuation, comes from God. They also illustrate the might and power of God as the creator of such a vast universe. Psalm 29 was apparently written during a great thunderstorm as the psalmist reflects on the power and glory of God displayed by the sound of the thunder, the powerful wind that broke and twisted trees, and the flashes of lightning (29:3-9).[5] As a result, the psalmist recognizes God as the Lord “over the flood” (29:10), which was probably intended as an expression of God’s superiority over the pagan gods who were considered to be present in the thunderstorms. In addition to the nature psalms, other psalms focus on specific aspects of God’s presence. For example, He is praised as the protector and benefactor of Israel in Psalms 66, 100, 111, 114, and 149; and He is praised as the Lord of history in Psalms 33, 103, 117, and 145-147.[6]
