dicussion question
Discussion Board 1:
- The first assignment is a 3–7-minute Kaltura video embedded in the discussion board in line with the Papacharissi methodology of everyday folks attempting to describe “what is democracy?” View the lesson this week before completing it.
Before you start, watch the Papacharissi and Headlee videos and read the After Democracy Preface and Acknowledgement along with Chapter One (What If?) and Chapter Two (Democracy on the Run). Reading the chapters along with watching the videos will be essential. You’ll find all module resources in the toolbar under course resources.
Part I.
Interview two friends, co-workers, or family members and ask them, “what is democracy?” Make sure your interviewees have enough time and space to answer. It is best to do this in person or over zoom. Take notes but do not record them since this would violate privacy. Were there any pauses or head-scratching on their end? Commentary is crucial to their response, including silence. Are these folks politically active or apathetic to the democratic process? Did the conversation surprise them and/or you? As in your commentary in Part II., you can ask them to explore what influenced their political ideology regarding democracy (see below).
Part II.
Now you turn the spotlight on yourself. There are no right answers other than creating an authentic portrait of what democracy means to you. Also, explore how democratic ideals were discussed in your own family (or not). What influenced your political ideology regarding democracy (e.g., a family escaping persecution for their religion in Ukraine)? Any revelations when exploring this topic? This 3–7-minute narrative will be created in Kaltura and shared along with responding to two different classmates. It is an opportunity to get to know your classmates more intimately.
To create a Kaltura video, go to the toolbar above, and you’ll see Learning Tools scroll to “My Kaltura Media” and create a new video. The link for Kaltura videos will also be located in this module’s course resources.
HOW TO POST
1. Under learning tools go to Kaltura my media, click in and pick add new; you can use Kaltura capture or upload one of your videos and then publish
2. There are a few ways to move forward. Download your video to your desktop
3. Then, go to your discussion board and create a thread. Call it Week One Kaltura video blog, and put your name in the subject area
4. In the body of the message, you’ll see a toolbar at the top. In between the number list and quick link — you’ll find an icon called “insert stuff” on your computer you upload your video. It’s fairly simple.
