Arguing a Position with Sources
For your final paper, you will take a position on a controversial issue that is, in some
way, related to your experiences or interests. Choose an issue that you feel strongly
about and develop a persuasive argument supporting why you feel the way you do.
Whatever position you take, you should incorporate opposing views into your essay.
You will need to summarize and respond to these different viewpoints. To do this, you
will need to make concessions, admitting the validity of someone else’s point, if you
can’t make an effective argument against it; in other instances, you will be able to argue
against someone else’s claims. You should also use at least three sources for the paper.
You should avoid writing about issues such as abortion, gun laws, the death penalty,
legalizing marijuana, and other “hot button” issues; with issues like these it is very
difficult to come up with something new to say, and, since most people have already
made up their minds, it will be frustrating to persuade them to think differently. Look for
issues where there are a variety of viewpoints and the potential for a reasonable audience
that is willing to consider differing points of view.
For this assignment, you will combine your own experiences and expertise with the
opinions and/or expertise of others, including those who oppose your viewpoint.
Your essay should provide:
• Background information on the subject for your audience
• Logical, emotional, and ethical appeals to the reader
• Summaries of and responses to oppositional viewpoints
• Works cited page listing the sources you used in MLA format
Audience & Purpose
Again, you should select a specific audience for your paper. Who do you want to
persuade or influence? You may wish to respond directly to your opposition. Also, be
sure to state your thesis as clearly as possible, including definitions of key terms and
explanations of your assumptions. Why do you think the way you do? How do you
justify your opinion?
Format
Your final draft should be at least 5-8 pages in length. Keep in mind that an effective
and/or credible argument may entail an in-depth presentation of the subject matter to be
fully persuasive. Also keep in mind that I am here to help you if you have any questions
