Divided Kingdom and Prophets
LIME the “divided kingdom” as Israel divides, through a civil war from disagreements about good leadership/who God is/etc. There is a Northern kingdom of Israel, and Southern Kingdom of Judah. (You don’t have to map out all the tribes, just the “line of division” between the 2 kingdoms.) Include pertinent textual references.
LIME the many prophets discussed in class, including Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Amos, Hosea, Micah, etc… Give each of these men a speech bubble. All of their speeches are primarily directed towards the people of Israel. Include pertinent textual references.
In the Isaiah speech bubble(s) write Isaiah 58:9-10
“If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk,
and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
then your light will rise in the darkness…”
And Isaiah 2:17
“Learn to do right; seek justice, which is to defend the oppressed
Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.”
And Isaiah’s vision of a Messiah in 61:1
“The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners”
In the Jeremiah speech bubble write in your own words a summary of Jeremiah 29:4-14.
In the Ezekiel speech bubble write Ezekiel 16:49-50:
“Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.”
In the Amos speech bubble write Amos 5:21-24:
“I hate, I despise your religious festivals; your assemblies are a stench to me.
Away with the noise of your songs!
I will not listen to the music of your harps…
But let just actions roll on like a river, honest character like a never-failing stream!”
In the Micah speech bubble write Micah 6:4,8:
“I brought you up out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery. I sent Moses to lead you, also Aaron and Miriam.
My people, remember…
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly…”
LIME the Kings/leaders of Israel for killing the prophets for these depictions of God’s frustration with Israel.
The killing of the prophets marks the end of Old Testament literature. The people are sent into exile and life goes on as it did, and the people wait for honest and hopeful leadership… they wait for a “Messiah” who will bring hope and good news, that they might be treated with kindness and justice by their leaders. But when that Messiah comes through the carpenter Jesus, who repeats the prophet’s messages, Israelite leaders kill him too.
