A key skill you will develop in the class is the ability to identify and analyze main ideas of written material. In order to develop this skill, you will take 2 in-class reading quizzes over readings for the course. Each quiz will be worth 100 points (15 for the thesis, 15 for the quality of your supporting evidence, 30 for the analysis of the material, 30 for the accuracy of your answer, and 10 for the clarity of your writing).
Your answer should begin with a concise thesis as a direct answer to the question, analyze the main ideas presented in the reading, and cite and analyze specific supporting details from the reading in support of your answer.
The quiz will assess your understanding of the book, The Kingdom of Matthias by Paul Johnson and Sean Wilentz.
based on one of the following questions:
- What role did the Market Revolution play in the story of The Kingdom of Matthias?
- How is each of the characters in the story connected to the patterns of change attached to the Second Great Awakening and the Market Revolution (choose at least 3 people to discuss)?
