What are some of the reasons for the lacuna that I pointed out in the lecture and that Snyder talks about in his article: that many people don’t realize that the mass killings of the Holocaust mainly took place on Eastern European territory and its victims were mostly Yiddish-speaking orthodox jews who didn’t make it to the death camps or the concentration camps. What are the main sources that we have used to understand this period in history and what are the limitations of those sources?

Watch the first 20 minutes of the Soviet film Triumph Over Violence/Ordinary Fascism. This was the film used to educate Soviet citizens about the Holocaust in the 1960s. It does not mention Jews explicitly even in the part that you don’t watch. What stands out to you about this film, and why do you think this film tells the story that it tells and leaves out other parts of the story?
