- Describe the core values and ethical principles of the profession.
- Describe the focus and purpose sections of the Code of Ethics, 1–6.
Note: You do not need to outline the subsections (1.01, 1.02, 1.03, etc.).
Pick oneof the sections (1–6) and describe how you would apply its focus to experiences in your field placement.
The NASW Code of Ethics has important core values and ethical principles. It touches on many essential areas. The core values include service, social justice, dignity and worth of a person, the importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence (NASW, 2021). Each value has an ethical principle that further elaborates on the value. Within service, the ethical principle states, “Social workers’ primary goal is to help people in need and to address social problems” (NASW, 2021). Regarding the “importance of human relationships,” the ethical principle states, “Social workers recognize the central importance of human relationships” (NASW, 2021). Each value has a moral principle that elaborates on the value.
The code of ethics aims to help guide social workers in this profession. There are six purposes in the NASW Code of Ethics. “ 1) The Code identifies core values on which social work’s mission is based. 2) The Code summarizes broad ethical principles that reflect the profession’s core values and establishes a set of specific ethical standards that should be used to guide social work practice. 3) The Code is designed to help social workers identify relevant considerations when professional obligations conflict or ethical uncertainties arise. 4) The Code provides ethical standards for the general public to hold the social work profession accountable. 5) The Code socializes practitioners new to the field to social work’s mission, values, ethical principles, and ethical standards and encourages all social workers to engage in self-care, ongoing education, and other activities to ensure their commitment to those same core features of the profession. 6)The Code articulates standards that the social work profession can use to assess whether social workers have engaged in unethical conduct. NASW has formal procedures to adjudicate ethics complaints filed against its members” (NASW, 2021).
If I were to pick one of the sections and apply its focus to experiences in my field placement, I would pick number 5. I would choose this because I am new to social work, and the code socializes and prepares new workers to commit to these core values. Number 5 helps me organize and navigate all I may encounter during my field placement.
