healthcare question
A man 35 years of age, was involved in a fight and sustained a large laceration to the center of his forehead. The patient presents to the emergency department alert and oriented without significant findings other than the 10-cm laceration. However, his speech is slurred, and he readily admits to drinking ten beers during the last few hours. The emergency department is very busy with more urgent cases, and the patient becomes impatient because of the wait. He wishes to leave but is urged by the ED staff to wait and is told that he should not drive. He is lucid, states that he will not wait any longer, and intends to drive himself home.
1) How does the patient’s intoxication affect their ability to make this decision? If deemed competent, what rights is he entitled to?
2) What precautionary measures can healthcare professionals implement to mitigate the risk of Mr. J causing harm to others?
3) After reading the articles below about nurse RaDonda Vaught’s criminal conviction, do you think that was a fair judgment, or do you agree with one of the authors that her conviction possibly will prevent some nurses from reporting their errors by covering them up?
