Cuyamaca College book report Fire in the grooveM
1. Summarize, in a total of no more than one page, the (key) events described in the books. Summarize a comparison of the events by completing the following table. This table should be included in the beginning of the report. Focus on important similarities and differences in text that accompanies and references this table. (This table can use smaller font (9-10pt) and spacing (single spacing) to allow the table to fit within one page considering the predefined margins for this report.)
Name and Location of Project |
Time Period of Construction |
Impacts of the fire (positive and negative) |
Most important factors that led to the fire and loss of life |
2. Compare and contrast the ways in which structures failed as a result of the disasters. These disasters occur over a long period period in the 1900s. Do you think that there is evidence from one to the next that the built environment is improving, or that people otherwise learned lessons from the earlier fires to make the built environment better support people surviving the disaster? You are encouraged to think broadly about this question, including issues such as escape routes, beyond simply the details of construction.
3. Compare and contrast the impact of other factors on the affected locations (such as bad luck, location, current events, political systems, etc. – things other than the way the places were built).
4. Compare and contrast the ways in which the built environment influenced survival in POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE ways? You can work from your answers to these questions in your individual reports (be specific, and argue from evidence).
5. In what SPECIFIC ways do you think things would be different if the same disaster struck today? In other words, do you think we have learned anything?
Please note that a SURVEY of your group will be conducted within a week after the group report submission date. Grades will be assigned based on a combination of the group performance and the balance of the group’s assessment of your individual performance, as indicated in the project charter. Part of the survey will include questions regarding your personal familiarity with ALL aspects of the group’s conclusions. No grade will be assigned to the members of the group until all surveys completed.
Guidelines
Suggested outline for the GROUP report
The report should have headings for each section, as suggested below, do not write using an essay format.
I expect that you will submit this information in a 5-7 page written report (not counting any front or back matter, see details below). You should use Times New Roman, 12-point font, space-and-a-half, 1-inch margins all around. Number your pages. Spelling, grammar, and presentation will be graded.
Front matter:
- Front page: Cover page with the names of the group members and the title of the report (for example: An analysis of structures and infrastructure over history. You can be creative and come up with a different title for your group report.)
- Add an additional page with the Table of Contents
Summary table – include the summary table developed in item 1 (this table should fit in a single page)
Introduction – on the page after the summary, add a paragraph or two introducing your report. Briefly share with the reader what the report is about and how it is organized.
Ways in which structures failed as a result of the disasters – include the answer to item 2 above by comparing and contrasting how the structures failed because of the fires.
Impact of other factors on the affected locations – include the answer to item 3 above by comparing and contrasting what was similar and what was different between the fires. Find common sources of problems, customs and culture, professional responsibility (or lack there of) that resulted in or amplified the catastrophic outcomes of the fires.
Ways in which the built environment influenced survival in POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE ways – include the answer to item 4 using a similar rationale used in the previous sections by comparing and contrasting the books.
Conclusion: What have learned from these fires? – include item 5 above. Include the group’s thoughts on, for example, whether a similar fire might happen today, and if so, how the design, construction, and use of similar structures might be approached differently today, and any particularly interesting thoughts or observations your team might have to prevent a fire.
Back matter
- Reference list with complete bibliographic records for any sources using in the report including the books the group read.
