PICOT Question: In a population of pregnant women presenting themselves for antenatal care, (P) how does the use of technology in the implementation of the prenatal education program (I) compared to the traditional prenatal education done through face-to-face contact (C ) affect the level of knowledge regarding prenatal care and the outcome of pregnancy (O) during follow-up visits?
Technology has completely changed the healthcare education field by providing new ways for patients’ involvement and education. Prenatal care education could now be tailored to the varied needs of mothers-to-be, allowing them access to the essential information they require to prepare for their new role in a flexible, mobile and comprehensive manner (Gordon et al., 2020). The programs, ranging from mobile apps to web-based platforms, put the needed information in users’ hands. It makes the gains in the understanding of the state of pregnancy and the management thereof easier.
Comparison of traditional face-to-face prenatal education with the present nursing practice courses illustrates the dynamic ability of educational methods to evolve. Though face-to-face teaching offers physical interaction and immediate answers, while technology-based programs introduce the advantages of self-paced learning and the possibility to restudy complex topics (Theresa, 2021). This means that the critical question remains unanswered, namely, the most appropriate method of prenatal education, given the individual characteristics of each person that affect the level of engagement, understanding and retaining information. The project’s expected outcome would be better engagement, increased awareness, and improved pregnancy outcomes, demonstrating the advantage of incorporating technology in postpartum care education.
