Literature Question

The essay should be 2000-3000 words double spaced. You must cite at least 7 articles . Your name and student number should be on a separate page at the end (not at the top) of your essay. Please do not put your name in the file name of your paper. This is an analytical, not merely descriptive, paper. You must make an argument that attempts to persuade the reader. 

Since you are trying to persuade the reader please write in the first person. (Say things like, “In this paper I will argue that…” Or, “my central argument in this paper is…”)  The best papers will anticipate and respond to objections from the other side. This essay is worth a lot so you should go above and beyond. The more citations the better. Please include parts of this reading and incorporate it into your essay, make sure when needed you use in text citations. Also use lots of articles relating to the below essay question and use facts to back up your argument. USE APA CITATIONS AND FORMAT. In all cases you need to include a bibliography at the end that is listed by Author and Date. In other words, the author and date in the parentheses must match the author and date in the bibliography.  NO PLAGIARISM.

Below is the essay question you should answer. 

“What responsibility do non-Indigenous people have to decolonize in their day-to-day lives? (In other words, is it acceptable for non-Indigenous people to not be engaged in any kind of anti-colonial behavior at all in their lives?”

Make sure when answering this question you must have a solid structure. You must include an introduction, body and conclusion. See below to know what each part should include.

Introduction 

1) THESIS – One or two sentences saying precisely what you will argue. Don’t be vague – state exactly what you intend to show. For example, “In this paper I will argue that hamburgers are better than hotdogs for the following three reasons…”. The thesis must be a clear and precise answer to the essay question. 

2) MINI-OUTLINE – A couple sentences that provide a road-map for the reader telling her/him how you will go about proving your thesis. o For example: “In the first section I will…. In the second section I will…. In the third section I will…”

• Body Paragraph:
• Make your argument follow the outline that you laid down. 

Make your argument as precise and clear as possible. The more that you exaggerate or make generalizations the less persuasive you will be.

• • Make sure your arguments are backed up by evidence. You do this by including statistics or by including references to other authors. 
• Every section should refer back to the thesis. So after every section you need to say something along the lines of “this is relevant because it supports my thesis that …”

• In order to avoid making a “straw man” argument, you need to consider real objections from the other side. What are the one or two main objections to your position? Why are you right and your opponent wrong? (Be careful to not caricature your opponent or make her/him sound stupid. You want to present your opponent in the strongest and fairest possible light before you show why they are wrong). 

• Conclusion:

• Restate the thesis that you have now demonstrated.

• Don’t introduce any new arguments.

Make sure the grammar is correct 

a) Don’t confuse “its” and “it’s”. (It’s = it is). b) Be careful with apostrophes. The Leviathan is Thomas Hobbes’s book, not Thomas Hobbes book

. b) Semicolons are never necessary. They can always be replaced with periods. If you want to use them for stylistic reasons make sure you do it right: they go in between two independent clauses.

c) Make sure that the paragraphs don’t wander. The last line of a paragraph should be talking about the same thing as the first line. E.g. “Eats shoots and leaves” ¹ “Eats, shoots, and leaves” 5) Citing sources is the way to demonstrate that you have engaged with other scholars. Scholarship progresses by building on the work of others. So citation is important to recognize their contribution as well as to corroborate your own argument. 

a) Use citations when using quotations or paraphrases. 

b) Use citations when referring to an author’s idea. 

c) Use citations to refer to a body of work on a subject.

Use appropriate language 

a) Don’t be sexist: say “humanity” not “man”. Say “their” instead of “his.” 

b) Smaller words are almost always better than big words. Shorter sentences are almost always better than long ones. 

c) Don’t use Latin, Greek, or French words if there’s an English one that works just as well. 

d) Say what you mean, not what sounds good. E.g. Do say: “Liberalism is the dominant political ideology of Canada” Don’t say: “Liberalism is the hegemonic ideal reified by the political supremacy of the bourgeoisie vis-à-vis the institutional imperatives latent in the late postmodern state of Canada.”
