English Question
Write a 3 page explanation (700 word minimum–your quotes do not count toward this minimum) of Hamlet’s soliloquy in your own words. What is he saying? Explain how/why you think it is important to Hamlet’s struggle as a person in the play. Quote 2 complete sentences from his soliloquy and quote one outside scholarly source.
To prepare this assignment, complete the following:
- 1. Read Hamlet (3.1. 56-88) and explicate Hamlet’s third Soliloquy. In your copy, notate each line, sentence by sentence, to explain what you think he means. Complete the Notebook exercise.
2. Choose two complete sentences from the speech. In your own words, explain what each sentence means. (Be sure to cite it correctly: introduce it in your own sentence; show line breaks; and identify the act.scene.line correctly in parenthesis after. Be sure to quote complete sentences and not just lines (show line breaks).*The title line does NOT count toward citation credit.
3. Find one quote from a reputable outside scholarly source–be sure it is has been published and the author is named!–using the SMC Library Databases. (Try starting with JStor or Masterfile Premier, and search Hamlet and Soliloquy). Find an article specifically about this play–No websites, blogs, online study guides, encyclopedia entries or book reviews.
