Patient care outcomes and experiences are expected to improve as technology in healthcare advances (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). At my hospital, for a number of years has moved electronic versions of charting, Electronic health (EHR) and Electronic medical records (EMR). In my healthcare facility we use Powerchart productions. can be customized to meet the demands of healthcare professionals. When a patient is discharged, Powerchart provides an app known as patient portal where the patient may view information regarding their admission. Upon discharge, the patient portal along with paper discharge instructions are given. One big benefit is the ability to retrieve their health information from the admission at any time following release. Information such as your labs, diagnostic tests, and follow-up appointments. The downside to this is a lot of patients are older and are not technologically savvy, which could pose a safety risk to a patient’s health information. People aged 65 and over account for only 16% of the US population but approximately 40% of hospitalized adults (Aronson, 2018). A possible danger to patient care is if the patient portal is too difficult to access, discouraging patients from adopting web-based technologies. Another concern that might hamper patient care is when the portal displays an excessive amount of useless or ambiguous data and information, overwhelming the patient or caregiver. Information overload can lead to anxiety, miscommunication, and worsen communication between the healthcare professional and the patient. To be useful, patient portals must have a user-friendly design, be available in multiple languages both online and in print, have adequate time for in-person or online training for navigating the portal, and healthcare providers must engage family members or caregivers in the portal’s use (Lyles et al., 2017). Patient portals are a significant advantage of extending the EHR to patients’ homes. The most promising technological development in healthcare now, in my opinion, is mobile health applications that allow users to track and report vital signs, blood sugar levels, symptoms, medication management, and other data. Many hospital systems provide mobile applications that allow patients to view their medical information and connect with their doctors. In addition to the patient portal, the health system where I work recommends apps for mental health care, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and lifestyle/diet apps. Mobile health applications can enhance patient care and efficiency by allowing patients to send data in real-time to their healthcare providers.-Christopher GillesReferencesAronson, L.
