English Question
For this essay, your goal is to get your audience to think about a subject in a new way, and in the
process of doing so, you must use a classic monster. You don’t necessarily need to use that
monster as the focus of your essay, but you must use one somewhere.
For the purposes of this assignment, a “classic monster” will be defined as any monster that is
the feature of a black-and-white movie. This includes vampires, zombies, pirates, zombie pirates,
werewolves, whatever the creature in the black lagoon is, King Kong, Victor Frankenstein-style
mad scientists, Norman Bates-style psychos, huge mutant ants, and many, many more. Feel free
to ask me if you aren’t sure whether a specific monster qualifies. I’ll try to be flexible here, but
please do confirm any borderline ideas ahead of the rough draft’s due date.
There’s one reliable development strategy that I recommend for this assignment. Relate some of
your own experiences—or an interest or hobby—to one of these classic monsters through
metaphor/simile. For example, being a hunter (of deer, for example) can be a good bit like being
a werewolf; feeding an addiction can sometimes feel like feeding a vampire; repetitive jobs can
make workers act like zombies. And so on. These monsters are flexible things, and they can be
applied to any number of situations, given a little creativity and intelligence. After finding that
metaphor to work with, you should then develop the metaphor in a significant, extended way
over the course of the essay; you don’t need to mention it in every single paragraph or run it into
the ground, but it should be more than a passing reference. If you avoid obvious content and
metaphors you’ve heard before, then odds are you’ll land on a new approach to that monster.
There are two further restrictions:
1) This is not a research assignment. You are not to consult a research source more
complicated than a thesaurus or dictionary. I want you to rely on your pre-existing
knowledge and understanding of the subject, and I want you to use that perspective to
change someone’s mind. Therefore, as with the narrative essay, pick something that
you already know and care about. This assignment is not about documenting the
history of a genre or expanding on a dictionary entry. If you already happen to know
some of that history, then that’s great and can be useful in the essay, but such content
still shouldn’t comprise the bulk of your essay. Instead, you should strive to use your
own perspective in order to take something familiar and make it new and interesting
again.
2) Don’t write another narrative essay, and definitely don’t write fiction. Your definition
essay might include a brief narrative or two as examples, sure, and you might mention
a fictional work or two, but the essay as a whole should have a more analytical
approach. Rather than telling a story about a monster, I instead want you to use a
monster to show us an interesting insight about the topic of your choice.
