Digital Journal
RELIGIONS OF INDIA REL-2703-001 – WINTER 2024 DIGITAL JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT Distributed to class on January 19, 2024 The purpose of this assignment is to get students thinking about their encounters with the religions of India in contemporary public life, in both global and digital contexts. Referring to the guided questions provided in the instructions, students will be required to carry out two tasks for this assignment: 1. Keep a digital journal over the next several months with weekly entries documenting daily encounters with the religions originating in India – Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism. 2. Write a 6-to-8-page (double spaced) final expository essay on their journal entries incorporating critical discussion of course materials. PART 1: DIGITAL JOURNAL (20% OF FINAL GRADE – See rubric below). Due: April 5, 2024, by 9AM CT. Late Submissions will not be accepted. Any work submitted after the due dates will receive an automatic grade of 0%. Please begin a journal today! In the journal, record detailed aspects of religions of India (Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism) that you encounter, online or in-person. We will refer to these documented encounters as artifacts. Here are some examples of artifacts that you might encounter: • You’re reading the newspaper and you find an article about the Dalai Lama’s visit to India and read it • You’re driving on the highway, and you notice a Hindu temple, so you look up the Hindu temple online or maybe you go regularly to this temple • You’ve been binging Gilmore Girls on Netflix and you notice one of the characters talk about yoga or Karma • You’re reading a graphic novel and you keep running across the names of Hindu gods • You’re listening to a New Books in South Asia podcast on Spotify, and you hear a scholar talk about their latest book on Muslim student activists involved in the farmer’s protest • You’re on Instagram and see a reel of a Sikh serving food at a charity walk. Taking fieldnotes: Keeping fieldnotes is a common and essential practice for academic researchers and critical analysis. This assignment requires that you document each of your observations and write detailed and descriptive notes about each artifact (try to answer who, what, when, where, why, and how). You will use these journal entries to write your final essay for this course. The more detailed your notes and observations are, the more effective your analysis will be. You can find some tips on how to take effective fieldnotes here: Emerson, Robert M., Rachel I. Fretz, and Linda L. Shaw. 2011. Writing Ethnographic Fieldnotes. University of Chicago Press. Birks, Melanie, and Jane Mills. 2015. Grounded Theory: A Practical Guide. Sage.
