It also imposes rules that restrict the reach and autonomy of civil society organizations by mandating their registration with government bodies and confinement to stringent legal guidelines. It is important to comprehend how the Chinese government has responded to civil society organizations and social activity for a number of reasons. First, it offers understanding of the nature of state-society relations in China, illuminating the degree of political liberties and the difficulties encountered by individuals and organizations calling for reform. Second, in a strictly regulated political context, it aids in evaluating the effects of government policies on the growth and operation of civil society.
