synthesis final touch up
Stewart-Steele1 Explanatory Synthesis Essay (20% of final grade) Purpose of the assignment for this class To promote mature academic thinking; to practice using quotations and paraphrases; to develop and practice summarizing and synthesizing. Assignment Write an explanatory synthesis using: • Three sources from your annotated bibliography • One chapter from Turkle • You are asked to identify 2 sub-topics for the three main topics that are discussed in some way within the selected sources. • Since this is an explanatory synthesis, not an argument, your thesis will describe or explain (see step 5 below for more information). In other words, you will compare and contrast how your sources treat the larger topic of your annotated bibliography. This essay is using and/or recycling some of the summaries you have written for your annotated bibliography. Paper Formatting The essay should be presented in APA format, with a title page, and should include a reference page for all the sources you used in the essay. Please note that the title page and reference page do not count towards the minimum page requirement. This essay will be a minimum of 4-5 pages. The title page and reference page do not count towards minimum page count. How to Write this Essay Step One: • To select a topic first think of the answer to your research question from MWP #1. Then identify the Umbrella topic within the answer. o For example, if my research question from essay #1 was: Has technology affect elementary to sixth grade students’ communication? o The answer might be Yes! The explanation of the answer could be: Technology has impacted children’s ability to communicate, which has impeded youths’ education, mental health, and prenatal relationships. • The Umbrella topic can be identified as: The impact of technological communication. • The main 3 topics which relate to the umbrella topic can now be identified as education, mental health, and prenatal relationships. • A thesis can now develop which identifies the umbrella topic along with the three main topics within the explanatory synthesis. o Example thesis: Technological Communication has affected children within EC-6th grades education, mental health, and prenatal relationships. • Last you will need to identify two subtopics for each one of your main topics. o For example, the main topic “education” could include the following two subtopics: classroom anxiety, and technology dependency. Step two: Stewart-Steele2 • Choose three of your sources from MWP #1 essay and 1 chapter from Turkle. Re-read and annotate the sources for the main topics and sub-topics that you have selected. Step Three: • Start drafting your synthesis. What is not useful, however, is to treat the issues so that one paragraph is devoted to one source and topic and the next paragraph is devoted to another source and topic. The purpose of the assignment is to synthesize material; therefore, each body paragraph will contain material from more than one chapter and source. Step four: • As you draft, remember to use transition phrases such as “…in contrast to…”, “…in other cultures, however….”, “…similar to the …” etc. Transition phrases are simple, but when used well they give an essay coherence (aka “flow”) and a professional quality. Step five: • For your conclusion, think about what we learn when we compare and contrast the material in your essay. Compare/contrast synthesis always need a point, and a conclusion is a great place to make it. The point of the comparison/contrast is the new understanding we get when we put some information next to other information in new ways. In the conclusion you can move away from the sources and into your own perspective about the importance of the material. Last work to present a call to action for the reader, meaning how can the reader get involved politically, locally, physically, etc. Step six: Revise and develop your draft. Edit your draft. Proofread your draft. Please note that those three things are all different stages in the writing process. Grading criteria and essay goals: • Does the essay demonstrate an accurate understanding of the sources used in the essay? • Is the organization a true synthesis of material and not a source-by-source summary of information? • Are the paragraphs well-focused and coherent with useful transition phrases? • Does the introduction contain a descriptive thesis? • Does the conclusion usefully wrap up the material? • Are the sentences basically clear? • Are the summaries effective?
