Assessment Description: Observing in more than one classroom allows you to consider different management styles and methods of addressing student behavior. This will help you develop effective classroom management that works for you and your classroom.
For this field experience, observe management styles and student behaviors in school-age classrooms. The classrooms I have chosen to observe is an InD (Intellectual Disabilties) and ASD (Autism Unit) class.
Observe the classroom management strategies and routines of at least two different K-Grade 3 classrooms. During your observations, take note of established rules, routines, and any other strategies the teachers use to help create a safe and supportive classroom environment. Observe student behavior and take note of any atypical behavior and how the teachers manage these behaviors.
Following the observations, interview each teacher about their management plan and philosophy. Select three of the six interview questions below:
What factors did you take into consideration while developing your classroom management plan?
Were you able to choose your own classroom management plan/model and behavior management system?
- In what ways did you collaborate with your peers, students, and families in creating your classroom management plan?
- By what methods are rules and routines communicated to students and families, and how are the rules and routines reinforced throughout the school year?
- What accommodations do you make in your plan for children with exceptionalities?
- When behavior interventions are necessary, how does your management plan help you to plan for and determine the interventions?
- Develop two additional questions to ask each teacher about their classroom environment.
- Use any remaining field experience hours to assist the mentor teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.
