Remember it is quite helpful for your classmates if you have your original post made by Thursday or Friday so that their responses can be thoughtful, stimulating, and inspiring growth. This week I am expecting you to expound. on 2 different prompts. When you respond to your classmates, you will respond to one student on the first prompt and the other student for the last prompt. Remember you are writing academically, so in these responses you are to avoid non-standard language, including the use of 2nd person narrative voice. Please remember to address your classmates by name.
Prompt per Major: There will be a Prompt A for which our OL/Business/Kinesiology majors will respond.
Prompt B is for our Education students to respond.
Students with a different major can choose the prompt to which they most easily relate. Please indicate the prompt to which you are responding by labeling it A or B.
Everyone will respond to C.
Prompt Option A> You are an owner and the managing partner of a successful down town gym that caters to professional clients who work downtown and frequent the gym either before work, on their lunch hours, or immediately after work. One of your highly-skilled and effective personal trainers uses such obviously substandard grammar that he represents the gym in a less than satisfactory manner. We are in a climate where finding hardworking, committed employees is difficult, yet you and your partners do not want the business’s reputation and image to be lessened. As the managing partner, what strategies would you implement to help your committed employee develop more skilled in using the Prestige Language of your clientele?
Prompt Option B> As a classroom teacher (please indicate the grade level of the students with whom you expect to work), you are aware that using appropriate classroom language is important to your students, but you are also determined to help them understand WHY the rules behind the standard. Explain at least 3 teaching strategies you would use to help your students be motivated to learn the standards of grammar.
Required Prompt C> From the class’s writing assignments, I am still not convinced that everyone has grasped the idea of Pronoun/Antecedent Agreement. You are using plural pronouns with singular antecedents in situations where you could have used the solutions proposed in the text. While the Prestige Language has made concession for political correctness, using correct agreement when sexist or non-inclusive language is not an issue is still important.
PROMPT C> Write a paragraph that explains and demonstrates corrections to sexist/non-inclusive language as well as an example and demonstration of a situation where agreement is used incorrectly in a sexist/non-inclusive situation. You will refer to The Reading Assignment from the materials posted in MODULE 2 in Sections 17E (p 113 and following) and Section 23 (p. 141 and following).
