Wilkes University The International Council of Nurses discussion
The International Council of Nurses (ICN) is a federation of over 100 nursing organizations that represents millions of nurses across the globe (ICN, n.d.). The ICN developed the NP/APN Network to serve as an international resource for nurse practitioners and to provide research and initiatives that strengthen the role of the nurse practitioner (ICN, n.d.). The ICN is involved with numerous projects to help lessen healthcare disparities worldwide. One such project addresses the burden of mental illness globally and the shortage of specialized nurses that are needed to meet this growing demand.
Stewart (2022) discusses the universal burden of mental illness in an ICN report stating that 10% of total global disease burden is due to mental illness or behavioral health disorders. Although there is a shortage of mental health nurses worldwide, there is a growing disparity between low- and high-income countries. Steward (2022) discusses how 75% of patients with mental illness in poor and middle-income countries do not receive any treatment. The disparity for mental health nurses is even greater with only 0.4 mental health nurses per 100,000 people in low-income countries versus 29 mental health nurses per 100,000 people in resource rich countries (Stewart et al., 2022).
After conducting a survey about the mental health nursing workforce, Stewart (2022) discovered that there are several reasons to account for a lack of mental health nurses worldwide. Some of the reasons that nurses in the survey cited include poor planning and policies, lack of incentive to pursue a mental health career, inadequate education, lack of recognition, and the social stigma associated with mental illness. Stewart et al. (2022) outlines recommendations for growing the global mental health workforce based on this survey, which entails policy change and increased funding for nursing education and employment. Stewart et al. (2022) found that a major problem is that only about 31% of countries currently collect data on mental illness. The lack of data makes it difficult to understand the full scope of the problem in certain countries (Stewart et al., 2022). Stewart et al. (2022) adds that by increasing the mental health nursing workforce, countries can collect more data and get a better understanding of their country’s mental health needs (Stewart et al., 2022).
