This assignment supports the completion of the following student learning and course objectives, as introduced under the Week 3 Overview page.
They include:
Applying the basic concepts central to labeling and conflict/Marxist theories
Analyzing popular methods of social control and their relationship to these perspectives
Relating ideas from a video on transformative justice to the labeling and conflict perspectives
Completing a textbox activity related to the UnSlut Project or the # NeverAgain movement.
These Learning Objectives reinforce the Sociology Department’s Program Student Learning Outcome #2: Assess competing theoretical approaches to criminology and social justice issues, and PSLO#5: Articulate the ethical and social justice implications of sociological inquiry. They also support this course’s Student Learning Objective (CLSO) 2: list and apply selected traditional and critical theories on deviance, CLSO3: identification of punishment and social control practices and their relationship to particular perspectives and power structures, and CSLO4: analyze a variety of current topics with sociological concepts and theories.
Tasks:
For this discussion, I would like you to do the following in original work that is written in full sentences and paragraphs.
Write an original post that answers Part A below and one of the options for part B:
Part A: Answer the question I raised for you to answer on the conflict/Marxist theory video lecture.
can you think of any example from the news today that that show any of these types of law as power? Austin Turk (19760 expanded on the tools of power: 1. There are (1) control the means of direct physical violence, I.e., war or police power; (2) control of the production, allocation, and/or use of material resources, i.e., economic power; (3) control of decision-making processes, i.e., political power (4) control of definitions of and access to knowledge, beliefs, values, i.e., ideological and living time, i.e., ideological power and (5) control of human attention and living-time, i.e., diversionary power (Turk 1976:280)
Part B1: Relate specific ideas about transformative justice from the What is Transformative Justice? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-_BOFz5TXov) video you are watching to three specific concepts from the labeling and conflict/Marxist perspectives (i.e., 3 in total between the two perspectives). Analyze the video by bringing in direct quotes and noting the timestamp for the quotes (e.g., 3.14 mins) to show you are quoting from this part of the video.
The minimum word count for all your responses together is 300 words (not counting my instructions).
Respond to another student who has not yet been responded to. Compare and contrast your answers. Ideally, you should pick someone who has answered the same choice for Part B that you chose. But if not, it is okay, since you all should read all of the material and be able to think of the answers you would have provided had you written up the exercise (that will help you study too). (150 word min.)
