Students should watch (listen to) a performance of the selected music (recorded, online, or in-person) and describe musical markers (for example, melody, rhythm, timbre, form, etc.), sounds, and instruments heard in the music.
The performance does not have to be of a live performance, but it can be if you choose.
Include a link to the online video of the performance you watch/listen to.
The paper should have an introduction and a conclusion, and should discuss the significance, history, current status, and cultural considerations of the music.
Here are some guiding questions:
Describe the music in general, and the music performance you watched/listened to.
What are the sounds, instruments, and some musical markers (melody, rhythm, timbre, form) heard in the music performance?
Where does the music come from?
Describe the history of the music.
Describe the significance of the music.
What is the current status of the music (for example, is it still performed the same as is traditionally was or has it been modified or adapted)?
What are the cultural considerations of the music? (for example, what aspects of the culture affect the music (this could be social, political, religious, etc.), or does the music affect the culture?)
The subject for the paper may be chosen from the below approved topics. If you would like to choose a different topic, it must be approved by Dr. Church.
The research paper will be 4-5 pages long, double-spaced, and use a standard font type (i.e., Times New Roman, Arial) with a 12-point font size. Files should be in a Microsoft Word format (.doc, .docx) and should be submitted on the Canvas site.
The paper must include a Bibliography (or Works Cited or References) page for the paper as part of the same word file. The bibliography page does NOT count in the 4 – 5 page length, nor does a title page. Students should choose APA 7th edition.
Students must use a total of no fewer than 5 scholarly sources: Books (E-books are fine), Journal Articles (can be found using JSTOR or Project Muse), or Encyclopedic Articles (Oxford Music Online). Please do NOT use websites, such as Wikipedia or other websites that are not scholarly; they will not count towards your final scholarly sources count!

In-text citations are expected for this paper whether you use direct quotes or paraphrased information that is not considered common knowledge.
