Resource Allocation
Resource allocation is viewed as a significant aspect of project management and involves distribution of resources to different project tasks to ensure the completion of their efficiency and effectiveness. Discussed in this paper is the resource allocation process for the project tasks which were outlined in Week 2 Work Breakdown Structure. The WBS consist of key steps, with each consisting of a specific set of requirements and resource needs.
Resource Identification:
Task 1:1 Assessing Needs and Wishes
Task 2:1 Kitchen Design and Planning
Task 3:1 Hire a Contractor or DIY
Task 4:1 Prepare Home
Task 5:1 Kitchen Demolition
Task 6:1 Kitchen Structural Build-Out
Task 7:1 Plumbing, Wring, and HVAC Rough-In.
Task 8:1 Finish Walls and Ceilings
After identifying resources, an over-allocation will be conducted to determine if any resources were assigned additional tasks viewed more than they could handle. The following criteria will be used for identifying overallocations:
Resource Utilization – Involve calculations of the utilization rate of each resource by dividing the total hours worked by the resources by the total available hours.
Task Complexity – The complexity of each task is evaluated to determine if specialized skills are necessary that were unavailable to the assigned resource.
Resource Capacity – The capacity of each resource is reviewed to ensure they were not overloaded with too many tasks.
Based on the analysis, the following over-allocations were identified:
Task 4 – Preparing my home will require clearing out the existing kitchen space, removing appliances, cabinets, and fixtures. Also, protecting other areas of my home from dust and debris during the demolition process.
Tasks 6 and 7– Kitchen structural build-out when making any structural changes (for instance, expanding the footprint of the kitchen), which is viewed as the time to do it. Install new walls, windows and doors as needed. Update plumbing, electrical wiring, and heating/cooling systems. Install new pipes outlets, and lighting fixtures. Ensure everything meet code specifications.
Task 8 – Ensure external walls are insulated, hang drywall, and finish seams. Prime and paint walls and ceilings to create a fresh look.
There are some tasks that are DIY-friendly, for instance, painting or minor demolition, whereas others should be left or professionals.
Resource allocation is a significant aspect of project management and involves distributing resources to specific tasks. Discussed in Week 2 Work Breakdown Structure, identified resources necessary for the different tasks and conducted an over-allocation analysis to determine if any resources were assigned additional tasks that would be difficult for them to handle. Based on the analysis, identified were over-allocations for the task complexity and resource capacity. These actions are responsible for ensuring each task is assigned an adequate number of resources and minimized over-allocations. In summary, the resource allocation process allowed managing the project effectively and ensuring the completion is a success.
In conclusion, resource allocation is viewed as a complex process that requires planning and analysis with care to ensure resources are allocated effectively and efficiently. Discussed were the resource allocation process for the project task outlined in Week 2 WBS. Identifying the resources necessary for the tasks, conducting an over-allocation analysis, and implementing an action plan, the over-allocations were addressed, and each task was assigned the appropriate number of resources.
