- Hello Class,
- Explain how the American culture and society changed in the North versus the South during Reconstruction.
- The Compromise of 1877 helped with the settlement of the presidential election in 1876. This compromise helped settle the election between Samuel J. Tilden and Rutherford B. Hayes. This dispute sent the nation into a state of unbalance, resulting in the end of the Reconstruction era (Adderley, 2022). Many instances occurred leading to this moment, but the compromise could be seen as the final turning point. In addition, many instances have helped change American culture and society between the North and South. These changes help establish civil righ, freedom, and respect for others.
We can look at Andrew Johnson’s Reconstruction Plan and its societal influence. Andrew Johnson had views similar to the Confederates and helped establish governments that would halt the progression of black people in society (Carlisle, 2021). This led to him needing to defend the governments he put in place because of the pushback. This contributed to the change in culture and society because it made many people hesitant about how to act toward African Americans, leaving them lost in society. Another instance that changed the culture and society was former President Lincoln’s Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction. Lincoln wanted to use this proclamation to help profit the United States even though this decision would impact the culture of America (McNeese, 2018). This proclamation impacted the American culture and society during the Reconstruction era because it was a step in working to end slavery. Lincoln wanted to build the country back together, but laws and order needed to be put into place to build that up; the tension was needed to change the culture of America forever. Lastly, I want to mention the Congressional Reconstruction Plan and its impact on American culture and society. This plan helped establish military governments in the South to help empower and guarantee the rights of black people (Carlisle, 2021). This upset the South and could have created much rebellion against them. However, these changes and many more were needed to help change and enhance the culture of America during the Reconstruction Era.
