Pediatric Growth and Development Project Grading Rubric The student will receive 12 hours of clinical time to complete this project. The student will select one child (which can be their child). If not their child, the student must acquire written parental consent and a parent MUST be present. Written parental consent must be obtained on the form provided and must be remained on file by the student. Do not submit actual document revealing pediatric clients name or family members name. While maintaining confidentiality, the student will complete each section of the G&D project assessing the child. Be sure to include in EACH section: textbook data, actual comparison of the child to the textbook and a conclusion as to if the child is meeting developmental milestones with evidence of why or why not. DO NOT PROVIDE ACTUAL PICTURES OF THE PEDIATRIC CLIENT, FAMILY, ETC. DO NOT USE ACTUAL PEDIATRIC CLIENT NAMES/INITIALS If a health issue, safety issue is found during assessment, inform parent and advise to follow up with health care provider immediately. Criteria Faculty Comments Introductory Paragraph – Brief introduction of what is to be presented in this paper. Do not include an abstract. Section I – Refer to Chapter 4 of textbook Physical Assessment (Vital Signs and Assessment of the various systems – Neurologic, Respiratory, Cardiovascular, Musculoskeletal, Gastrointestinal, Integumentary, Pain, and Sensory), Immunizations history, G&D chart plotted Section II Erik Erikson’s stage of development (provide supporting data for why you think the child is in a particular stage). Section III Assess Psychomotor Development (Provide drawing and writing samples) Be sure to include textbook theoretical data of where child should be as far as fine and gross motor skills, in comparison to child’s actual development in fine and gross motor skills. Section IV Assess Cognitive Development (using Piaget) Compare textbook staging for Piaget in comparison to child’s actual staging. Provide data to support conclusion of child’s staging. Grading /5 /15 /10 /5 /5 Section V Conduct an appropriate play and toy safety assessment. Include appropriate home and toy safety considerations for the child’s development stage per textbook/theoretical data. /10 Section VI Conduct patient teaching on topic of most importance to the child and family include the evaluation of understanding (verbalized, demonstrated, or illustrated) Make sure teaching is relevant to child’s developmental stage, illness, psychosocial concerns, etc. Section VII Conduct a psychosocial assessment (identify community agencies the family may benefit from having exposure to) Include psychosocial data such as type of home child resides in, family dynamics, spiritual assessment, family smoking, drinking, recreational drug use history and support systems. Section VIII – Conclusion Summarize whether or not the child is on task and support your response Section IX – Follow Up Topics Within 1 week of initial visit Follow-up (Detailed information on what you as the nurse would follow up on within one week, if it were allowed. Note anticipation of assimilation of education provided) Grammar/Organization & Format: Style appropriate, no spelling, grammatical or typographical errors, detailed and appropriate communication related to pediatric clients.
