Objectives
compose an essay in which you articulate a specific claim that answers the questions posed in the assignment prompt
synthesize evidence from the text to support your argument’s conclusion and premises and therefore, prove your argument
move your readers to act or respond in some way based on the argument you present
produce a final draft of your Argument essay that demonstrates thoughtful revision efforts as compared to your rough draft
Instructions
An argument essay asks you to negotiate different perspectives on a common issue. In other words, you will make a claim and then support the claim with reasons, with the goal of convincing and persuading your audience effectively.
In The Nature Fix, author Florence Williams delves into the intricate relationship between humanity and the natural world, and you will see author Robin Wall Kimmerer explore this relationship in Braiding Sweetgrass as well. Both authors emphasize this relationship’s profound impact on our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Both texts advocate for a reconnection with nature as a means of healing and nurturing the human spirit.
Drawing upon the ideas presented in both books, craft an argumentative essay in which you explore the following question:
How does immersing oneself in nature contribute to personal well-being, and what societal implications arise from disconnecting from the natural world?
In your essay, you might consider the following aspects:
Effects on Mental Health: Analyze the evidence presented in The Nature Fix and Braiding Sweetgrass regarding the positive effects of nature on mental health. Discuss how experiences in nature can alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression, as well as promote overall psychological resilience.
Physical Well-being: Examine the ways in which spending time in natural environments can enhance physical health, as discussed in both texts. Explore concepts such as increased physical activity, exposure to natural elements, and the potential role of nature in preventing or managing health conditions.
Cultural and Spiritual Connections: Reflect on the cultural and spiritual significance of nature, as depicted in Braiding Sweetgrass. Consider how indigenous perspectives presented by Kimmerer provide insights into humanity’s interconnectedness with the natural world, and the implications of disregarding these connections in contemporary society.
Societal Consequences: Evaluate the broader societal consequences of disconnecting from nature, drawing upon examples and arguments from both texts. Discuss potential impacts on environmental stewardship, community cohesion, and the overall well-being of future generations.
Your essay should not address all of the aspects above, but rather you might choose one (or two) to focus on in your argument. And, your essay should be persuasive and move your readers to act or respond in some way based on the argument you present.
Criteria for Success
Your final, revised draft of your Argument Essay should include the following elements:
an introduction that includes some background on your topic, a summary of what you will argue in the essay, and a thesis statement at the end of the introduction that explains the essay’s main argument.
a thesis that makes a claim as it addresses the question, How does immersing oneself in nature contribute to personal well-being, and what societal implications arise from disconnecting from the natural world?
body paragraphs that stay on a single topic, open with a topic sentence (a sentence that says the main point of your paragraph), give concrete examples with descriptive detail to demonstrate your main idea in the paragraph, explain how the examples relate to your main point, and end with a statement about the main point, not on some detail from the example.
references to specific components of the texts with appropriate citations that support your thesis and therefore, your argument.
a strong conclusion that sums up the main point of your paper and ends with a “takeaway” for readers: what lesson can be learned from your main point, or what should be done in the future.
a title that reflects the topic of your essay.
In addition, your final, revised draft of your Argument Essay should:
be at least 6 full double-spaced pages in length (6-8 full double-spaced pages is appropriate)
demonstrate careful proofreading so that grammar and/or stylistic errors do not significantly inhibit your writing.
follow MLA formatting guidelines (as reviewed in lab assignments for Modules 6 and 7).
And, as always, your essay needs to reflect your own writing. Using AI to generate text that you turn in as your own writing is an example of plagiarism and is not acceptable. Assignments that seem to be written in a voice other than your own or that are flagged as containing AI will receive a grade of “0.”
