newy Counselling Dealing with Emotional Turmoil Questions
SCENARIO Albert Taylor has come in for counselling because his wife told him to come in. He has been having an affair with a lady friend at work which he says is now finished. He has had affairs in the past and is now afraid his wife has had enough. She has threatened to leave him but he agreed to speak to a counsellor in a bid to save his marriage. He is charming and friendly. He has a good job and they have two teenage children. Albert tells you that he has been arguing a lot with his wife; the children are having issues at school and fighting with each other a lot, his wife has withdrawn and he is finding it hard to communicate with her. He has not been sleeping well and has been eating more, putting on weight and drinking heavily at the weekends. TASK IT is time for you to conduct your second counselling session to work with the concerns of the client. Read the scenario. At the beginning of the second session, you will need to check in with your client and give a summary of the previous session from your client notes. Throughout the role play, make sure that you: • Are taking into account the key principles of person centred approach. • Listen carefully to your client and show him empathy. • Make your client feel safe, don’t judge them and don’t give them any advice. • Observe and take into account your client’s body language and respond accordingly. In your role play, make sure that you have covered the following tasks: 1. Work through concerns: o Identify and work with the uncertainty and ambivalence of your client. o Support your client to process difficulties. o Highlight parallels and links in the client’s experience. o Identify which intervention or skills are needed and implement the intervention. o Support your client to identify and use their strengths. o Reflect back, clarify and review perceptions of the client’s feelings. Assist your client’s awareness of underlying issues. o Work with changes in your client’s life. 2. Review progress and address issues as they arise: o Monitor and review the counselling process with your client. o Review yours and the client’s perceptions of the counselling process. o Address any tension, threats or disruptions to the counselling process. o Facilitate change at a pace your client can tolerate and assimilate. o Acknowledge, value and work with your client’s uncertainty in the counselling relationship. o Use the code of conduct in addressing any ethical dilemmas. o Assess the appropriateness of ending the current counselling process. 3. Use micro counselling skills carefully by considering your relationship with the client: o Attending behaviours and listening skills. o Questioning and responding skills. o Reflecting content and summarising. o Concise feedback to the client of positive aspects they can use for further improvement. 4.
