In Part One of this assignment, you selected and analyzed a particular criminal justice policy issue. The second task for this assignment is to set the goals and objectives for the policy that you will be proposing. Please address the following questions for this part of the paper:
Selected Policy issue: the use of solitary confinement
Define the goals of your policy. Put this in the broadest terms possible. For example, you might like to get drugs off the street or reduce white-collar crime. Your goals will constitute an abstract statement of purpose within which you will ultimately outline specific objectives.
Specify at least two measurable objectives for your goal(s). What are the key results that you intend to accomplish? For instance, you may define the success of your policy initiative in terms of the percentage of people addicted to drugs and the cost of illegal drugs on the street. For this part, you must establish a reasonable time frame for achieving your objectives as well as a target population that you intend to impact.
- Detail exactly how you envision an intervention working to affect the objectives you have outlined. What is the causal model? In other words, exactly how will the interventions you propose lead to the outcomes being impacted?
Outline what individuals and agencies should be participating in the policy planning process. What particular expertise do they bring to the table and what role might they play in developing and implementing the policy? Expanding on this question, some of the stakeholders you identified in Part One of this paper may have goals that are compatible with the proposed policy initiative. Other stakeholders may have goals that are incompatible. Identify areas of overlap and areas of conflict in the larger policy environment.
